Position Information
This is a full-time, permanent position providing professional level support assisting customers using library resources, computers and conducting research. This position will be responsible for developing and conducting library programs and training as directed; they will also be responsible for assisting with collection and library resource management as assigned.
 
This position functions as the on-site Professional Librarian and person in charge in the absence of the Supervisor at a branch library, in addition to assisting with Circulation services as needed.  This position may be hired to work primarily at a specific facility with a primary focus but will substitute at other locations as needed and depending upon staffing needs may be re-assigned to a different primary facility.


Locations: Will work primarily at an assigned location, hours may change based on business need.  May be required to occasionally to substitute at another Aurora Library location based on staffing needs.

Tallyn’s Reach Library (23911 E. Arapahoe Rd.)

Primary hours will include days, nights, and weekends but will primarily be a Sunday – Thursday schedule. Hours are subject to change dependent upon department needs.   

 The City of Aurora will conduct ongoing screenings of applications on a first come-first serve basis; as soon as we determine to have a qualified pool of applicants, this position may close quickly and without notice.

PRIMARY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Provides friendly, efficient, and professional service to customers in-person, by telephone and email
  • Functions as the on-site person in charge overseeing staffing and facility customer related functions in the absence of the Supervisor
  • Develops, plans, oversees, and conducts programs on a wide range of topics for adults, teens, and children
  • Oversees programming conducted by Library Assistants
  • Works with community partners to plan and develop outreach events that may include attending fairs/events and/or speaking to community groups or school children
  • Performs high level readers advisory and reference searches using library resources, on-line databases, and other reputable sources
  • Assists customers with accessing and using library resources (books, databases, computers, etc.) and computer questions related to Microsoft Office products, internet navigation, email services, third party web sites and other software applications on public computers
  • Coordinates volunteers including training, scheduling, and tracking time
  • May work on joint regional library service committees and user groups representing the Aurora Public Library
  • May assist in collection/inventory management duties including weeding, sorting, shelving, cataloging assistance, interlibrary loan, and database input/maintenance when directed by supervisor
  • Performs additional duties as assigned

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS & WORKING CONDITIONS

A combination of relevant education and experience may be substituted for the minimum education and experience requirements on a year for year basis

Education:

  • Masters of Library Science Degree or current enrollee in Masters of Library Science from an ALA accredited program
  • A Master's Degree in another field with relevant library experience may be considered

Experience:

  • At least 6 months professional library experience, or 2 years library experience
  • Lead experience preferred
  • Preference for strong children’s programming background

Knowledge:

  • Knowledge of the principles, organization, and practices of library service
  • Library classification system
  • Internet computerized systems and their applications to assigned functions
  • Basic trouble-shooting in computer operation

Abilities:   

  • Ability to deal with stressful situations with tact and diplomacy
  • Communicate with diverse customers/staff of all ages in a professional, age and culturally, appropriate manner
  • Communicate effectively in writing; use general office equipment, computers, calculators, and copy/fax machine
  • Perform basic mathematical calculations
  • Follow oral and written instructions
  • Work shifts, including some nights, and weekends
  • Ability to speak a second language a plus

WORKING CONDITIONS

Essential Personnel:

  • When a local announcement of emergency or disaster is declared by the City, all City of Aurora employees may be required to work as essential personnel

Physical Demands:

  • Light to sedentary physical work requiring the ability to lift 40 pounds with or without assistance
  • Frequent lifting, carrying, walking and standing
  • Hand/eye coordination to operate office equipment, carts, and moveable shelving
  • Vision to read and interpret reports, documents and other written information
  • Frequent speech communication and hearing to maintain communication with employees and citizens


Work Environment:

  • Works primarily in clean, comfortable environment with shared work stations and equipment
  • Shift work to include days, nights, working weekends and occasional holidays. Must be willing to work at least one closing shift


Equipment Used:

  • Uses standard office equipment including personal computer and common office software such as email, internet, Word, Excel and menu driven databases as a part of the Library automated systems
  • This position may require the incumbent to use personal equipment (e.g. vehicle, cell phone, tools, etc.) in the course of their employment
