Job Description

Rhode Island College invites applications for the part-time monthly Reference librarian position. This position works at the Reference Desk to provide coverage on Monday-Thursday evenings. The individual will be responsible for reference and research assistance to the Rhode Island College campus community and patrons who may use the Library and promote effective use of library resources by students and faculty.

Work Hours: Part-time, temporary position (Fall 2023), 16 hours per week (Mon-Thurs, 4:00-8:00PM).

Essential Duties:

  • Provide reference and research services to Rhode Island College students, faculty, and staff, as well as to community users, which includes but is not limited to instructing users how to search the library’s catalog, print resources, electronic databases, and other available information sources.
  • Provide general reference service and research support in person, by phone, by email and by chat to patrons.
  • Perform basic referral to other campus resources as needed.
  • Serve as supervisor and backup to Reference Student Assistants whose shifts overlap with this part time librarian.

Occasional Duties 

  • Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned by the Director of the Adams Library.

Required Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities 

  • Knowledge of integrated library systems, online databases, LibGuides and MS Office.
  • Ability to provide reference service and research support to library patrons.
  • Good writing and communications skills.
  • Good customer service skills.
  • Effective independent and team work skills.

Required Qualifications

  • Education: Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited four-year institution.
    Experience: Library Reference experience

Preferred Qualifications

  • Academic library experience.
