Job Description

Rhode Island College invites applications for the full-time position of the Assistant Professor, Instruction and Assessment Librarian. This is a continuing 35 hours/week calendar year position. 

This position provides vision and collaborative leadership for and participates in the Library instruction program. Leadership responsibilities include promoting alignment of Library’s instructional activities with the Library’s instruction plan and student learning outcomes, as well as academic program learning outcomes; facilitating communication and shared development for library instruction activities; and leading assessment and reporting activities related to instruction. In addition, this position participates in the Library’s liaison program and is responsible for providing collection development and workshops, orientation, information literacy instruction, and research consultation services for students and faculty, primarily for the Zvart Onanian School of Nursing, physical, biological and health sciences programs. Some evening and/or weekend work is required.

Minimal Salary for Terminal Degree: $73,624.70

Essential Duties

• Provide leadership for the ongoing implementation and updating of the Library’s instruction program; promote alignment across Library’s instruction activities with library and college student learning outcomes.
• Work collaboratively with library faculty and staff, create and assess research and instructional tools and resources.
• Deliver classes and workshops to support information literacies across the College and collaborate on the creation of instructional materials, outcomes and activities.
• Participate in the Library’s outreach and instructional activities in the undergraduate First-Year Writing and First Year Seminar courses.
• Develop print and online guides, instructional materials, tutorials and other resources to support information literacy instruction and student learning.
• Develop assessment tools and assess classes, tools, and student information literacy development especially related to student success and retention.
• Collaborate with the Director of the Adams Library to gather assessment data and prepare reports with data visualization on library instruction.
• Provide research services and in-depth research consultations for faculty, students, staff, and affiliated researchers, in-person and virtually.
• Serve as the liaison for designated departments/programs (Zvart Onanian School of Nursing, physical, biological and health sciences sciences) to facilitate communication about library services, programs, policies and procedures, and resources to students and academic faculty, and develop collections in line with the pedagogical and research needs of the departments.
• Monitors and evaluates trends and developments relevant to academic libraries, particularly research support and library instruction.
• Commitment to continuing development of teaching skills and on-going evaluation and self-assessment of teaching.
• Undertakes responsibilities required of faculty appointment, including participation in library, college and professional committees, membership in professional organizations, publication, and professional development activities.

Occasional Duties 

• Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned by the Director of the Adams Library.

Required Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities 

• Demonstrated ability to work creatively, collaboratively and effectively as a team leader, as a team member, and independently
• Demonstrated ability to teach effectively in a variety of settings and modalities (e.g. in-person, online, individual instruction, group instruction)
• Demonstrated commitment to public service, with experience in providing library reference and research support using a variety of modalities
• Demonstrated knowledge of current and emerging trends in information literacy and assessment
• Excellent presentation, oral and written communication skills, with the ability to effectively engage with diverse populations
• Demonstrated experience working in diverse groups and demonstrated contributions to cultivating equity and inclusion in an education and/or library setting
• Excellent organizational skills

Required Qualifications

Education: Master’s degree in Library Science from an ALA-accredited program or equivalent.
Experience: Demonstrated teaching experience, preferably in a higher education or academic library setting.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience in assessment to ensure continuous evaluation and improvement
• Experience in providing instruction and research assistance to nursing and health science programs
• Experience with collection development in an academic library
• Experience in academic libraries
• Experience using SpringShare software
• Experience with HTML and CSS
• Bilingual
