Job Description

This position is part of the Talking Book and Braille Library (Talking Books) division. An estimated 62,000 Oregonians have limited vision or other disabilities which prevent them from being able to use conventional books or other printed materials. Talking Books serves the Oregon regional library for the print-disabled within the National Library Service's network as a public library by providing a wide variety of reading materials in audio or Braille formats.

As the Talking Books Librarian, you will coordinate user services, outreach activities, database administration, and collection cataloging within the Oregon Talking Book and Braille Library, and to carry out specific responsibilities within Talking Books that provide specialized information –related services for the users.

The Community

The Oregon Talking Book and Braille Library is searching for a full time, permanent, Public Services Librarian!  This exciting position is located in Salem at the beautiful State Library of Oregon.  As the Public Services Librarian for the Talking Book and Braille Library your time will be split between enhancing our patron services (30%), cataloging the collection (30%), outreach and travel (25%), and database administration (15%).  This exciting position has a unique blend of internally focused work and getting out in the community to raise awareness of the library services offered by the Talking Book and Braille Library. 

The Talking Book Library serves a wonderful blend of all ages and interests with accessible books in audio and Braille and is a regional library of the National Library for the Print Disabled; a division of the Library of Congress (NLS).  Boasting an ever-growing audio and Braille collection of over 150,000 titles, Talking Books serves thousands of people in Oregon who experience print-disabilities.  We are looking for a dynamic, future focused, dedicated professional to help us grow and improve our services to patrons.  In 2022 the Oregon Talking Book and Braille Library was designated as the Oregon Center for the Book; becoming the first ever accessible library to hold the honor. Talking Books strives to honor the NLS mission, That All May Read, by actively serving and promoting accessible library services for anyone experiencing disabilities that prevent them from interacting with standard print.
