The Amelia V. Gallucci-Cirio Library at Fitchburg State University, Fitchburg, MA invites applications for a full time benefited position at the rank of Assistant Librarian - Instruction & Research Services. This is a temporary, one-year (non-tenure track) appointment effective Fall 2023. This appointment concludes automatically on May 31, 2024.
General Statement of Duties and Responsibilities:
The Full-Time Temporary Instruction & Research Services Librarian will work with the tenure-track librarians to provide library instruction and reference services to the University community, and participate in related projects, during the academic year.
Detailed Statement of Duties and Responsibilities:
Instruction:
- Assist the Instruction Team in providing synchronous and asynchronous instruction services.
- Participate in the instruction schedule providing formal and informal instruction sessions as well as scheduling research appointments with students, faculty and staff.
- Participate in the development and management of course materials and curriculum content (print and digital) supporting the instruction programs.
Reference:
- Participate in reference desk rotation.
- Answer both ready reference and in-depth reference questions by IM, chat, email, phone and in-person.
Shared Responsibilities:
- Provide librarian liaison and collection development duties in selected subject areas.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
Benefits & Additional Compensation Info
Salary commensurate with qualifications, experience and in accordance with the MSCA Bargaining Agreement.

Qualifications Required at Hire:
- A Masters of Library Science (MLS) from an ALA-accredited program or an equivalent Master's degree, such as a Master of Library and Information Science (MLIS) or a Master of Library Science and Information Science (MLS/MLIS), with degree awarded before start date.
- Ability to work effectively with diverse populations.
- Ability to perform the duties of the position with or without reasonable accommodation.
- Must be able to satisfactorily pass a check conducted by the Criminal History Systems Board (CORI) as well as a completed background check satisfactory to the university.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience providing reference and instruction in an academic environment.
- Demonstrated understanding of the information needs of undergraduates, graduates, and faculty.
- Interest, experience or coursework related to academic librarianship and/or teaching.
- Experience working with diverse, multi-cultural populations.
