Job Description

Why does the job exist?

As part of the Public Services Bureau at the New Mexico State Library, this position provides advanced or expert level information services to library customers and is responsible for the statewide interlibrary borrowing and lending system for small, rural, and prison libraries. Additionally, this position handles circulation operations, including over dues, billing, and cash handling. To effectively meet the needs of libraries in New Mexico, this position is also responsible for the library information science collection development. The person in this position must demonstrate initiative and a strong customer service commitment. The position provides direct customer assistance at the public service desk and will conduct complex research to respond to information requests. The position also assists with Center for the Book projects and represents the State Library at the annual National Book Festival.  Please visit us at www.nmstatelibrary.org

How does it get done?

ILLiad and Circulation Services - performs daily statewide interlibrary borrowing and lending operation tasks according to national standards, provides Articles Plus document delivery services, and performs weekly and monthly library circulation and cash handling tasks.

Reference Services - provides expert, professional level information and reference service in order to provide access to information and guidance to information sources to the general public, scholars, NM libraries, and government agencies.

Center for the Book - assists with the National Book Festival, Letters About Literature, and other Center for the Book projects.

Collection Development - manages collection development for the Library and Information Science professional collection and the general serials collection.

The ideal candidate shows initiative and has a strong commitment to customer service. Has knowledge of or experience providing: interlibrary loan services; adult research and reference services in a library setting; and conducting complex library research.

Employment Requirements

Employment is subject to a pre-employment background investigation and is conditional pending results. Must possess and maintain a current Defensive Driving Course Certificate from the State of New Mexico or must pass and receive Defensive Driving Course Certification as a condition of continued employment.  Must possess and maintain a valid New Mexico Driver's License.

Working Conditions

Work is performed in an office setting with exposure to visual/video display terminals and extensive personal computer and phone usage. Some sitting, standing, bending and reaching is required. Occasional lifting and/or pushing of boxes or books weighing up to 40 lbs.

Bargaining Unit Position

This position is covered by a collective bargaining agreement and all terms/conditions of that agreement apply and must be adhered to.
