Job Description

BASIC FUNCTION:

The Special Programs and Instruction Librarian provides information literacy instruction, liaises with academic departments, and develops and publicizes innovative programs and displays that showcase research, teaching, and creative activities at the University. In this role, the incumbent will continue to build close collaborative relationships across the university and work closely with all members of the library team, especially the Circulation and Library Logistics Manager, who is a partner in coordinating and publicizing events.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Special Programs and Outreach

  • Work creatively and collaboratively with university offices, academic departments, and student organizations to plan and promote events in McKillop Library showcasing Salve Regina scholarship and exploring the Critical Concerns of Mercy and the University mission;
  • Coordinate thematic displays of library materials to promote collections, Salve Regina scholarship, and university events and initiatives;
  • Coordinate marketing and promotion of library programs, events, and relevant initiatives, working closely with the library's Circulation and Library Logistics Manager.

Reference and Instruction

  • Serve as library liaison to assigned academic departments, building and fostering collaborative relationships;
  • Provide reference service at designated public service points and assist users in face-to-face, online, and hybrid learning environments;
  • Plan, deliver, and assess course-integrated instruction sessions in partnership with faculty;
  • Develop teaching plans, materials, and assignments based on best practices for teaching information literacy and research skills, including active learning or problem-based learning activities;
  • Engage collaboratively with other academic support units such as the University's writing center to integrate information literacy with other student learning outcomes.

Collection Management

  • Reach out to faculty in liaison areas to identify information and research needs and select subject-specific library resources to support student learning;
  • Collaborate with other library units such as the Collections team on larger projects such as the evaluation of journal packages, databases, and other collection management activities.

Professional Development

  • Maintain knowledge of emerging trends, technologies, best practices, and pedagogical principles in instruction and information literacy;
  • Continue to develop professionally through participation in professional associations or other professional activity.

OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Serve on library and university committees.
  • Attend department and library staff meetings.
  • Participate in cross-training initiatives to provide occasional coverage of circulation functions.
  • Evening and weekend work required (Sunday-Thursday schedule)

Requirements:
ALA accredited master's degree in library or information science.

  • Knowledge of the ACRL Framework for Information Literacy for Higher Education and its use in teaching.
  • Strong commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion in higher education.

  • Demonstrated strong interpersonal skills including a positive, patient, friendly, and approachable demeanor.
  • Some experience with instruction and familiarity and aptitude with educational technology.

  • Demonstrated history of excellent organization, self-direction and seeing a project through from conception to completion.
