Description
We are a busy public library and makerspace that are community destinations for people of all ages to enjoy and learn. The Children’s Library is a Family Place Library with a central focus on early literacy and serving families with children newborn-12 years, while the makerspace, inventHQ, provides a place for people of all ages and backgrounds to invent, learn, play and build community. We are looking for substitutes to work at either of these locations. This substitute position is scheduled as needed and does not include benefits. Schedule will vary and include days, evenings and weekends.

Scope of Work

  • Possesses basic knowledge concerning library services which will include practical experience in library services and programs.
  • Is fully present. Gives customers their full attention and demonstrates a commitment to offer the best customer service.
  • Assists in use of the library or makerspace and its resources.
  • Assists in selection of appropriate resources.
  • Demonstrates and assists patrons with use of computers and devices.

Essential Required Tasks/Examples of Duties

If Assigned to Children’s Library:
Greets and welcomes the public. Provides customer service in-person and on the phone while working at the Children’s Library reference desk to assist children, parents, and adults who work with children. Interviews patrons and determines information needs; answers reference questions using print and electronic resources; recommends book and other library materials; takes meeting room inquiries and keeps statistics. Assists patrons in the use of the library catalog, database and resource materials;  performs basic troubleshooting for game devices and other electronic resources. Responds to and resolves customer service needs that may include location of materials; information regarding library services or programs; interpretation of library policy; internet computers & accompanying software and other equipment such as copy machines and scanners. Provides a welcoming library experience to children and families, helps to maintain noise and cleanliness standards by picking up the library play spaces, straightening shelves, picking up materials, organizing items, re-shelving materials, or shelf reading materials.. Has a basic understanding of early literacy and child development. Works as a team with Children’s Services staff and refers patrons to other staff as appropriate. Maintains confidentiality of all patron data and information. 

If Assigned to inventHQ:
Works in collaboration with other library and makerspace staff to provide access to makerspace tools, machinery, and software. Must be comfortable facilitating hands-on learning. Maintains a welcoming and safe environment that supports patrons exploring new technologies and learning new skills. Teaches people of all ages how to use makerspace equipment, including but not limited to vector design software, laser cutters, electronic cutters, sewing and embroidery machines, small board electronics, and 3D printing and design. Connects patrons with creative information, tools and resources. Refers patrons to other staff as appropriate. Maintains confidentiality of all patron data and information. Assists in maintaining the physical space to include straightening, picking up materials and organizing.
