Job Description

The University of Denver Libraries, comprised of the Main Library at the Anderson Academic Commons, a remote storage facility called the Hampden Center, and the Bonfils Stanton Music Library in the Newman Center, is a highly collaborative organization that serves a diverse population, ranging from our students, staff, and faculty to public and other academic patrons from the surrounding region. Position Summary

This part-time, benefited position reports to the Library Collections Procurement and Processing Manager and manages and implements key areas of the processing workflow related to the preparation of library materials and the evaluation, repairing, and processing of damaged materials. Participates as a member of the Library Collection Procurement & Processing unit within the Collections and Content Management department. This position willingly shares skills and knowledge, participates in the process flow of work of the unit, and receives instructions regarding assignments. The work schedule is generally Monday – Friday with a flexible timeframe within the library’s operational hours, and requires in-person work onsite at the Main Library.

Essential Functions

  • 50% Performs a variety of detailed processing tasks such as labeling and property stamping books and other materials, and applying security strips. Uses the Alma library resource management system to retrieve and edit bibliographic records; create, delete or edit item records; and print labels as part of the materials processing workflow. Includes routing materials to the appropriate library locations for pick-up, shelving, or ingest. May train student workers to perform material processing tasks.
  • 40% Evaluates damaged items to determine if repair is feasible. Follows established library procedures to repair and preserve damaged books. Maintain shelves with items too damaged to be repaired by the library, and coordinates review of the items with other library staff to determine if items should be rebound, replaced, or withdrawn. May train other library staff to perform minor repairs for items.
  • 5% Prepares and sends damaged books to bindery for re-binding. Provides back-up support for serials binding.
  • 5% Provides back-up support for receiving newly acquired items in Alma on an as needed basis.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Basic interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Basic math skills; ability to maintain accurate and thorough monthly statistics on work performed.
  • Good judgment, problem-solving, and decision-making skills are needed to provide practical solutions, and to ensure accuracy in a detail-oriented environment.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and oral; typing speed of 35+ wpm; attention to detail; and ability to work collaboratively and cooperatively as a team member.

Required Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous library experience
  • Experience with online database systems
  • Familiarity and experience with computers and peripheral hardware.

Working Environment

  1. Standard office environment.
  2. Unexpected interruptions occur often and stress level is moderate to high.
  3. Noise level is quiet to moderate.

The Library Collections Procurement and Processing department workplace is within the Materials Processing area of an academic library and is a culturally diverse one. Employees work collaboratively in a team-based organization. The department is highly automated with attention paid to ergonomics and safety. Employees have access to a workstation equipped with easy access to local bibliographic utilities and cataloging resources and tools via the Internet.

Physical Activities

  1. Must be able to lift and move books; and move heavy book trucks from one area to another.
  2. Must be able to sustain long periods of time working at a computer terminal.

Work Schedule

The University’s administrative offices are open Monday - Friday, 8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. Work schedule may vary.

Hourly Range:

The hourly range for the position is $18.00 - $18.50.
