The Duluth Public Library is seeking a librarian with a passion for customer service, as well as a dedication to welcoming and serving all people in the community.
Applicants will be considered for job openings that come up over the next seven months. The current opening is in adult services with an emphasis on local history, general reference, technical assistance, and reader’s advisory.
We are looking for:
- Librarian with Master’s Degree in Library Science, ideally with public library experience
- Dedication to customer service
- Strong reference and readers advisory skills
- Enthusiasm for planning and providing engaging events for the community
- Knowledge of collection development and management
- Skill in helping people navigate online resources
- Creativity and flexibility to provide outstanding library service in the midst of change
Key tasks include:
- Staffing a service desk, offering local history and general reference assistance and readers advisory suggestions
- Providing outreach to the community
- Planning and providing programs and events for the public
- Working collaboratively with a team of staff to plan, provide and improve library services
- Selecting, evaluating and weeding items in a designated collection, working within a budget

The Duluth Public Library is a bustling, well-loved cornerstone of the community. The Main Library, with its ore boat architectural design, is located in Duluth’s picturesque downtown on the shore of Lake Superior. This is a particularly exciting time of planning and change at the Main Library, as the City of Duluth seeks funding to replace this aging facility with a new building that will also be home to its Workforce Center.
In addition to its flagship location downtown, the Duluth Public Library operates an outreach van and two beloved neighborhood branches. The West Duluth Branch is located in a city-owned building that includes a senior center as well as fire and police stations. The Mount Royal Branch is located in a very busy shopping center near the University of Minnesota, Duluth. Each location has a unique feel, but all place a strong emphasis on customer service.

Duluth is located close to Lake Superior’s beautiful North Shore and the Boundary Waters Canoe Area, but still an easy drive to Minneapolis and St. Paul.
