JOB DUTIES

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

Works under the guidance and direction of the Library Director.

Commits to excellence in customer service at all levels, including coworkers. Actively advocates for the library with patrons and the community.

Possesses an ability to recognize and adjust to library trends in operations and to accurately respond to changes in reading trends in public collections.

Exercises supervision over professional, paraprofessional, technical, clerical and volunteer adult services staff as assigned. Ability to create team buy-in and create opportunities for staff to develop team member skills and to model appropriate team member participation.

Performs a variety of administrative, managerial, and supervisory duties in the overall management of the library's adult services. Manages and prepares statistical measures, reports, creates and submits grants, evaluating progress as needed.

Assists in hiring, instructing, training, and evaluating the work performance of library employees.

Plans and organizes workloads and staff assignments for adult services; trains, motivates and evaluates assigned staff; reviews progress and directs changes as needed. Actively provides staff opportunities to learn new skills.

Manages budget allocations for adult collections, programs, and operations. Provides direction to ensure appropriate and quality collection development practices.

Administers the development of library collections in all formats, including special collections, and facilitates their use.

Plans, coordinates, implements and evaluates adult library programs to meet the objectives identified in library planning documents and community needs, expressed or perceived. Actively participates in in creating library-wide programming, in both a leadership role and a supporting role, with patron friendly processes.

Participates in the development of marketing materials for promoting library materials, programs, and services.

Works closely with the Library Director and other team members to maintain effective and efficient delivery of resources, both in and outside of the library.

Communicates library goals to staff with regular communication plans. Recommends departmental policies and procedures with regard to collection development and adult services operations.

Works with the Library Director in the development and maintenance of library policies.

Interprets goals, objectives and policies of the library to staff and patrons in a customer friendly manner. Models positive leadership skills when assisting with difficult interpersonal communications.

Stays informed about current trends in adult services and reference practices, and applies these trends within the library's goals and objectives.

Participates in professional organizations and activities to keep informed of current and emerging trends in public libraries.

Participates in and attends staff meetings and trainings, daily shows, programs, and other training sessions of the library.

Participates in grant writing processes to help supplement library funds.

Has an understanding of cataloging and accepted standards.

Understands and follows written and/or verbal instructions.

Must be available to work a varied schedule including evenings, weekends and some holidays.

Attendance at work is an essential function of this position.

Complies with all library procedures and policies, and the City guidelines, rules, regulations, procedures, and policies.

Operates a motor vehicle to assist in carrying out the business of the department and the City.

May serve as a member of employee committees, as assigned.

May represent the library on various community or professional bodies, as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

This position is subject to the City's Drug and Alcohol Free Workplace Program, which includes: pre-employment testing, post-accident testing, reasonable suspicion testing, return to duty testing, and follow-up testing.

Background check is required.

This position has the responsibility to participate in and comply with the City's Environmental, Health, and Safety Program.

Valid New Mexico (or state of current residency) driver's license with acceptable driving record.

Masters of Library Science Degree, including five years of progressively responsible library and supervisory experience. Emphasis in adult services is preferred. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be substituted.

PERA:             Public Employees Retirement Association - Mandatory Retirement Program
                        11.65% of pre-tax salary with City matching 10.80%
                        5-year vesting; Must retire from City to receive any portion of City’s match

New Mexico Retiree Health Care Authority:  Employee contributes 1% of after-tax salary; City contributes 2%

PAY FREQUENCY:  26 pay periods per year – Bi-weekly on Fridays

VACATION: Year 1 – 5 = 10 days; 6+ years = 15 days; 15+ years = 20 days; 20+ years = 21days
                           Pro-rated each pay period 
SICK:              Twelve days per year – pro-rated each pay period
                     
HOLIDAY:    Ten days annually

HEALTH INSURANCE:   Optional. (Rates effective January 1, 2023; subject to change)
