Job Description

Bemis Library has an exciting opportunity for a talented tech savvy individual to oversee and coordinate all aspects of the library’s makerspace, TheStudio@Bemis. This includes development and execution of group programs (individually and in coordination with others) on a range of Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math (STEAM) topics and maker technologies, coaching library users individually in the use of technology and equipment, care and upkeep of equipment and materials, and planning for future evolution of technology and services available in TheStudio.

The Makerspace Coordinator also provides general customer services to library users at points outside TheStudio by answering reference and reader’s advisory questions, assisting library patrons in locating information and materials, and facilitating patrons’ use of the library’s full range of resources and services.

The ideal candidate is creative and thoughtful about providing an exceptional customer experience, is innovative, seeks opportunities for collaboration, and enjoys learning and helping others learn about the latest technology platforms.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Cultivates an environment of excitement and curiosity around exploring, learning, and applying technology.
  • Develops and organizes educational programs in TheStudio covering a range of STEAM topics and maker technologies, for learners at all skill levels
  • Develops and coordinates patron and staff training for equipment and technologies in TheStudio, including creation of instruction materials.
  • Develops and maintains documentation (such as training guides and usage instructions) for staff and patrons.
  • Promotes safe use of TheStudio and its equipment by developing, communicating, and enforcing safety protocols and guidelines.
  • Develops and enforces credentialing system to ensure safe usage and preservation of TheStudio’s equipment.
  • Performs or oversees maintenance and repairs of TheStudio equipment
  • Maintains inventory of equipment, parts and consumables; locates sources for supply purchases and tracks the consumables budget.
  • Assists in the promotion of TheStudio through social media, press releases, outreach, and similar efforts.
  • Monitors developments in the field of applied technology learning and maker disciplines.
  • Makes recommendations for future programs and services, and related purchase of equipment, supplies, books, and software.
  • Assists library patrons in navigating and using any of the library’s other services during scheduled shifts at service points outside TheStudio.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s degree and two (2) years of experience in a makerspace or related hands-on learning environment featuring a variety of maker technologies (public library experience preferred); or an equivalent combination of education, training and work experience that produces the knowledge, skill, and ability to perform the essential duties and responsibilities of the position.
  • Must be able to pass a pre-employment criminal background check.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES:

  • Advanced knowledge and skills in a variety of technology and maker disciplines, including but not limited to robotics, 3D printing, graphic design, video and sound recording, digitization of analog media, sewing, arts & crafts, and common computer software and applications.
  • Creativity and innovation with an interest in generating and developing new ideas, taking risks, solving problems, leading changes, and strengthening the library’s range of maker activities and services over time.
  • Strong project management skills to implement new technology services to best serve patrons and staff.
  • Strong public speaking skills to make presentations to small or large groups.
  • Strong pedagogical skills to design effective learning experiences.
  • Analytical skills to evaluate effectiveness of TheStudio’s programs and services.
  • Solid knowledge of general library principles and procedures to perform the essential duties of the position.

WORKING ENVIRONMENT & PHYSICAL ACTIVITIES:

  • Work for this position is performed indoors in a public building environment. This work may include occasional exposure to dust from books and electrical hazards from computer and technology equipment. 
  • Occasional work is performed outdoors assisting with library programs. This work environment includes prevailing weather conditions. 
  • Requires frequent lifting and carrying of books weighing 0-50 pounds, retrieving books and other materials from bookshelves at heights ranging from one foot to seven feet; frequent pushing of wheeled book carts weighing 50-100 pounds with or without assistance.

Hiring pay range: $25 - $30 per hour

This full-time position is non-exempt per FLSA and is eligible for overtime compensation.

Work Schedule: Monday-Friday/Saturday, weekends and evenings required.
