Job Summary: | The Technical Services Specialist works cooperatively with employees in the Strauss Health Sciences Library at the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus to provide primary and independent support in collection development and catalog records management work. The position exists within the Collection Management department and plays a major role in furthering the success of the Library’s collection building initiatives. The incumbent shall stay abreast of new technologies and integrate them into department practices. At the Senior Professional level, work is performed fully independently. Professional Field Academic Support/ Library Supervision Received The Library Academic Services Senior Professional is supervised by the Collection Management Department Head. Supervision Exercised The Library Academic Services Senior Professional may explain work processes and train others. This person may serve as a resource or guide by advising others on how to use processes within a system or as a member of a collaborative problem-solving team. Key Responsibilities Collection Development: 35% - Select monographs for the library’s collection based on multiple factors such as inclusion in recommended lists, use of previous edition, cost, user requests, and awareness of health sciences issues and trends (approximately $20,000 budget). Research and compare potential resources for purchase.
- Select non-serial items (e.g., DVDs, anatomical models) for the collection.
- Maintain lists of suggested items and rejected items.
- Correspond with library users who request new resources.
- Serve as library primary contact for donation inquiries. Make decision regarding donated books, and refer other donation inquiries to appropriate staff.
- Make decisions regarding withdrawing and replacing outdated and/or missing non-serial items.
Technical Services: 35% - Perform copy cataloging and physical processing of library materials.
- Update catalog records for collection maintenance projects.
- Manage the library’s print serials collection and process journal issues for binding.
- Lead weeding or relocation projects of printed materials, including editing catalog and item records in Alma.
- Provide support for projects in any of the library’s collections as needed0
- Supervise and train colleagues and student workers on bibliographic projects as needed.
Assessment: 15% - Analyze the print collection in preparation of relocating selected materials to the storage facility.
- Assess the collection in selected subject areas and compare with peer libraries.
Exhibits: 5% - Collaborate with others in the library to organize and/or create exhibits featuring items from the library’s collections;
Departmental work: 5% - Contribute to the development of policies, guidelines, and best practices and maintain such information on designated Collection Management folders and drives
Professional Development & Service: 5% - Attend professional development activities such as classes and conferences that are relevant to job duties.
- Participate in committees and work groups of the library, campus, regional or national organizations as appropriate.

| Minimum Qualifications: - Bachelor’s degree in education, psychology, business, public administration, health care, educational technology, social science, liberal arts, communications, accounting, finance, library science, or a directly related field from an accredited institution.
- Two (2) years of experience in a library, or directly related position in a professional setting.
Applicants must meet minimum qualifications at the time of hire. A combination of education and related technical/paraprofessional experience may be substituted for the bachelor’s degree on a year for year basis. Preferred Qualifications: - Experience in academic library or higher education environment.
- Experience with an Integrated Library Management System and discovery platform, such as ExLibris Alma and Primo.
- Experience with collection development work, such as reviewing vendors’ new books lists for possible purchase; pre-order searching, maintaining wish list, etc..
- Experience in copy cataloging of library materials, or experience with certain cataloging tasks, such as editing bibliographic and item records
- Knowledge and/or experience with cataloging tools and cataloging standards, such as OCLC Connexion, LCSH, MeSH, MARC format.
- Experience with library acquisitions tasks such as creating order records and associated brief catalog records
- Experience with book donation processing.
- Experience working with library vendors.
- Experience with library vendor websites, such as GOBI, Rittenhouse, etc.
- Experience with creating library exhibits.
- Experience with LibAnswers, LibGuides, and other library software or applications.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: - Intermediate to advanced skills using Microsoft Office applications such as Outlook, Teams, Excel, and Word.
- Strong interpersonal and customer service skills with the ability to establish rapport with persons of diverse backgrounds (i.e. working with internal and external contacts, such as students, staff, faculty, vendors, or publishers).
- Must possess a professional demeanor and have experience that demonstrates ability to interpret complex rules, regulations, policies, procedures, and guidelines.
