Job Description

The Town of Vail is now hiring a Library Associate II focused on Youth Services. This position is responsible for programs applicable to children and young adults. The Associate serves as a member of the team responsible for decision-making with regards to new databases & technologies, short & long range planning, and periodic review of programs, services & policies being considered for evaluation & improvement. The Associate works designated hours on the Service Desk each week and also fills in, whenever possible, for other staff members. They also handles a variety of Reference, Reader’s Advisory and Circulation-related duties

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provides exceptional customer service to all library customers while working at the Service Desk. Handles check-ins, check-outs, renewals, Reader’s Advisory, Reference assistance, and provides Vail visitors and guests with local tourist information, etc.  Works additional hours at Service Desk on an as-needed basis. 
  • Plans, organizes, promotes and implements special programs for children, preschool to young adult. This includes weekly Story Hours, annual Summer Reading Program, the annual Family Fireside Holiday Party, Scarecrow Making Day, Reading Buddies, as well as various other special programs offered throughout the year. 
  • Assists with the preparation of flyers, press releases and other communications for children’s-related programs. This may be through the schools, the Vail Daily, social media, etc. 
  • Responsible for ensuring that all areas of the library related to youth services are kept tidy, relevant and appealing at all times. This includes displays, shelving of library materials, toys and other manipulatives.
  • Creates lesson plans specific to grades K-2 for the monthly visits from the students at Red Sandstone Elementary. This program evolves and the Associate will need to be on top of communication with the schools to ensure that we are meeting the needs of their students.  Promotes the use of children's databases through such outreach programs.  The Associate is also responsible for communication with Vail Mountain School teachers as we work to expand our outreach to their students, as well.
  • Develops programs for children and their parents which will encourage reading, viewing and listening skills and the use of library facilities and materials. Coordinates program planning with school librarians to ensure complementary services to students.  Serves as liaison to other community agencies serving children.  Coordinates service delivery as pertains to children’s services.
  • Ensures that the general appearance and order of the children's collections are consistently first rate.
  • Orders books, media, & databases for children as well as art materials and other supplies to enhance lesson plans.
  • Responsible for the management of the StoryWalk including, but not limited to: book selection and related activities, marketing, switch-out of the panels and overall appearance of the installation.
  • Responsible for the management of the library’s Little Free Libraries including, but not limited to: marketing, ensuring they are well-stocked and maintained at all times.
  • Works with other staff on the activities and use of the library’s Tech Studio.
  • Prepares reading lists for school and community distribution.
  • Provides leadership and guidance to teen volunteers and other special assistants. Oversees all children’s services staff.
  • Participates in periodic review of programs, services and policies for evaluation and improvement. Suggests new children’s services policies.
  • Attends meetings and professional development opportunities, when possible. CAL, CLiC, SRP-related programs, to name a few.  Maintains awareness of trends in youth services and of issues affecting youth.  
  • Performs duties in other areas of the library and participates in library special projects as needed.
  • Serve the citizens and guests of the Town of Vail by abiding by all Town of Vail core values.
  • Perform job in accordance with all Town of Vail safety practices.
  • Other duties as assigned.
  • Evening and weekend shifts required.

In addition they must meet the following requirements:

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge of Reference & Circulation-related functions 
  • Working knowledge of computer applications for library services 
  • Ability to work effectively & communicate with library staff as well as patrons in a pleasant, courteous manner
  • Knowledge of current trends and emerging technologies in Public Service in a library setting
  • Ability to work well with patrons of all ages, both individually and in groups
  • Knowledge of standard library procedures, current info technology, database search capabilities, library procedures and policies.

Education, Experience and Certificates

  • High School Diploma ; some college coursework (required) ; Bachelor’s Degree (preferred) 
  • Minimum of three (3) years progressively responsible experience in a customer service environment required 
  • Minimum of three (3) years progressively responsible experience in a public library setting required.
