Job Description

ASSISTANT DIRECTOR/TECHNOLOGY COORDINATOR

NATURE OF WORK

This is responsible administrative and professional library work in the direction of all activities at the town library facilities.

An employee in this class assists the Director and staff in providing the best possible library service to patrons and, in the absence of the Library Director, assumes responsibility for the operation and maintenance of the town library.  Work includes the supervision of all library employees, the implementation of operating procedures in accordance with professional standards of library administration, and carrying out responsibilities within policy directives of the Board of Trustees.

In addition, an employee in this class serves as systems coordinator for new technologies in the library, including assistance in use of software programs, web page development, and server maintenance, as well as installation and troubleshooting of equipment and peripherals.

ILLUSTRATIVE EXAMPLES OF WORK

Assists patrons in the proper use of On-Line Public Access Computers and other reference resources and equipment.

Reads professional literature; is aware of current library trends and practices.

Represents the library at various meetings, programs and conferences.

Assists, Reference Services Coordinator, Children's Librarian and Adult Services Librarian, when required, with reference, readers advisory and programming to respective clientele.

Maintains statistics; prepares reports; recommends policy and procedural changes.

Installs and troubleshoots computer equipment, peripherals, and software.

Assists staff in use of software and development of databases and software applications.

Plans, publicizes, and executes informational programs on technology related topics.

Manages library’s social media through the social media policy or direct management of some posts.

Assists the Library Director with short-and long-range planning and with development of the proposed annual budget.

May assist with statistical analysis and the preparation of a variety of reports for the Board of Trustees, the Town, the State, and other agencies. 

Assists in the supervision and evaluation of library employees;

Helps to enforce the rules and regulations of the library;

Represents the Director at Board meetings and other library and community functions, as required;

Serves as a floater to cover various departments when there is need.

KNOWLEDGES, ABILITIES AND SKILLS

Considerable knowledge of professional library principles, practices, methods and techniques;

Good working knowledge of modern principles and practices of library administration and personnel supervision;

Considerable knowledge of library resources and materials;

Ability to plan and coordinate programs and activities;

Ability to maintain effective working relationships with a variety of professional and community groups, state and town officials, library staff and the general public;

Ability to deal with the staff and the public in a courteous and efficient manner;

Ability to plan, supervise and evaluate the work of subordinate library employees;

Skill in the use of new technologies including computers and peripherals, Windows servers, software programs, audiovisual equipment, and other library and office equipment.

Skill in repairing and/or upgrading computers and peripherals.

Ability to prepare reports and keep proper records.

MINIMUM EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING

Considerable experience in professional library work, including some supervisory experience and leadership qualities.

Graduate degree in library science.

Education and/or experience in use of computers, especially with word processing, spreadsheet and web page applications.

The Community

The Cumberland Public Library is a department of the Town of Cumberland. It is a suburban area of about 35,000 residents, close to the capital of Providence, RI and an hour ride to Boston. The Library is situated in a former Monastery on 500 acres of parkland. The 55,000 square foot Library draws patrons from northern RI and nearby Massachusetts. Besides a Children's, Adult and Teen Centers, the Library also has seven meeting rooms for programs and local community groups. The Library has both traditional and tech savvy patrons and the staff produce innovative programs.
