Job Description

Duties/Description:  Librarian I’s provide professional services and other forms of assistance directly to patrons of all ages. Duties include providing professional services in the areas of reference, collection development, and programming for children, library instruction, technology support, and other tasks needed to provide core library services to their clientele. Librarian I’s assess user needs and design appropriate programs and services to meet those needs.  Librarian I’s are expected to monitor expenditures, collect relevant data, evaluate program performance and deliver reports as required for programs and services within their assigned areas. Librarian I’s may be required to occasionally perform other duties outside their assigned areas when necessary to maintain the effective operation of the library. Librarian I’s report directly to the Associate Director.  Librarian I’s receive guidance from, and coordinate their activities with, the Senior Librarian or Librarian II working in their section. 

Skills and Abilities Required: Librarian I’s must have a strong commitment to public service, an ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing, and to work independently without direct supervision. Librarian I’s must have an ability to exercise sound judgement to interpret and apply library policies and rules. Librarian I’s must have a working knowledge of public library operations, automated library systems, and information technologies and services commonly used by their cliental.  Employment offers are contingent on passing a physical examination and criminal background check (CORI).

Benefits & Additional Compensation Info

Hours:   This is a full-time, non-exempt position covered under a collective bargaining agreement with the Town. Thirty-five (35) hours per week. Requires working two evening shifts (1:00 to 8:00 PM) and alternating Fridays and Saturdays (9:00 AM to 5:00 PM).

Salary: The starting rate is $26.76 per hour with increases to follow in three annual steps.
