Job Description

BiblioTemps® is an employment service of the Massachusetts Library Systemthat provides experienced library workers for temporary placements in public, academic, and special libraries throughout Massachusetts.

Title:                Technical Services Librarian

Location:          Bolton Public Library (Bolton, MA)

Start date:       October 16, 2023

End date:         December 31, 2023

Schedule:         25 hours per week, schedule to be determined

Pay Rate:         $20.75 - $24.00 per hour, based on experience

Statement of Duties:

The employee assists the Library Director in planning, coordinating and directing the daily operations of the library and the classification of all library materials in accordance with Dewey Decimal Standards (DDC) and Library of Congress Subject Headings (LCSH).

Essential Functions:

  • Responsible for the processing, classification, and circulation of all library print and non-print materials.
  • Responsible for original and copy cataloging of all formats of materials.
  • Downloads OCLC records
  • Interprets and applies Library of Congress (LC) Subject Headings, the Dewey Decimal Classification System, RDA, AACR2, and OCLC manuals in cataloging and classifying library materials.
  • Maintains records, keeps statistics, and assists in preparation of various reports.
  • Maintains a working knowledge of library resources and an awareness of new tools.
  • Utilizes new technologies, electronic equipment and on-line resources in support of division operations and trains staff on their proper application.
  • Assists with the routine maintenance and security of the building and safety of patrons.
  • Assists with planning, promoting, design, and presentation of special library programs.
  • Maintains the library's website.
  • Maintains the library's social media accounts.
  • Participates in the analysis, development and implementation of library policies and operating procedures.
  • Participates in library associations and regional library services, workshops, and seminars to keep informed and current with library trends, techniques, and professional issues.
  • Gathers data, researches, and formulates recommendations for product recommendation for office equipment, circulating technical equipment, and AV equipment.
  • Maintains an inventory of processing supplies.
  • Performs circulation functions including cash handling.
  • Assists library users with technical questions.
  • Trains circulation staff on technical questions regarding audio books, downloadable materials, various devices, online databases, public computers, and print station.
  • Trains and supervises the library's Shelver(s).
  • Performs other duties and assigned or necessary.

Supervision Required:

Under the general direction of the Library Director, the employee plans and carries out the regular work in accordance with standard practices and previous training, with substantial responsibility for determining the sequence and timing of action and substantial independence in planning and organizing the work activities, including determining the work methods. 

Supervisory Responsibility: 

The employee, as a regular part of the job, is required to lead other employees to assist them in completing their assigned work. The employee is responsible for training and supervising the department's Shelver(s), including taking any disciplinary action.

Recommended Minimum Qualifications: 

Education and Experience: Required: Graduate of a four-year college and 1-3 years related work experience. Preferred: Master's degree preferred in Library Science from a program accredited with the American Library Association.

Knowledge, Abilities and Skill:

  • Ability to learn various and complex computerized cataloging systems
  • Working experience with spreadsheet and database technology and software
  • Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing
  • Strong commitment to consistent excellent customer service
  • High level of professionalism and commitment to the organization
  • Demonstrate proficiency in current and emerging technologies
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Possess excellent interpersonal, communication, and customer service skills
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office, Google Docs
  • Familiarity with HTML
  • Respond appropriately to urgent or emergency situations (lost child, fire alarm, etc.)

Physical Demands: 

Little or no physical demands are required to perform the work. Work effort principally involves sitting to perform work tasks, with extended periods of bending, walking, kneeling, standing, twisting, and reaching with hands or arms to reach or retrieve library materials or books. The employee is required to frequently lift, push, pull, or carry objects such as books, equipment, and computer paper. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the position 's essential functions.

Motor Skills: 

Duties may involve assignments requiring the application of hand and eye coordination with finger dexterity and motor coordination. Examples include but are not limited to operating a personal computer or climbing a step ladder in order to reach or retrieve library books or materials.

Visual Demands: 

Visual demands require the employee to constantly read documents for general understanding and for analytical purposes. The employee is routinely required to determine color differences.
