COORDINATOR, SUMMER READING / EARLY LITERACY LIBRARIAN

Location: Koelbel Library, Child and Family Library Services

Reports to: Supervisor, Early Childhood Literacy Services

FLSA Status: 40 hours, Exempt

Pay Rate: $60,200 - $75,100

Purpose:

Serves a District resource to provide library services and access to information. Fifty percent of the role works cohesively with the Child and Family Library Services team to plan, develop, and facilitate district-wide services and programs focused on early childhood literacy. Through a team-oriented process, fifty percent of the role serves as the Coordinator of the Summer Reading program, collaborating to plan design, implement and evaluate program.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

50% SUMMER READING COORDINATOR DUTIES

25% OPERATIONS

  • Joins the Summer Reading leadership team to strategically plan and implement the Arapahoe Libraries Summer Reading Program.
  • Coordinates timelines, committee schedules, project documentation, agendas and notes.
  • Leads cross-department meetings.
  • While budget accountability lies with the Associate Director, the Coordinator is responsible for day-to-day resource management, ensuring the Summer Reading Program stays within budget.
  • Collaborates to organize and analyze evaluation data and documentation related to Summer Reading Program activities.

25% PROACTIVE COMMUNICATION

  • Assists in planning and implementing an internal and external stakeholder communication strategy.
  • Builds strategies to maintain effective relationships and ongoing communication with summer reading teams members, library branch, and department staff.
  • Works to build and maintain effective working relationships with outside vendors.
  • Responds to internal and external inquiries in a timely and professional manner.
  • Helps develop and facilitate internal and external stakeholder input and feedback processes.



 

50% EARLY LITERACY LIBRARIAN DUTIES

25% PROGRAMS AND SERVICES

  • Implements Family Place Play and Learn workshops and designated parenting programs.
  • Collaborates to plan, participate and support CFLS team programs and outreach initiatives.
  • May provide support for district-wide events and initiatives.

25% LIBRARIAN OPERATIONS

  • Serves as an early literacy librarian liaison, assessing needs, attending library branch meetings as needed, providing early literacy training and mentorship for new staff, sharing resources, materials and ideas for children's spaces, relaying relevant information and offering support in children's areas.
  • Participates in CFLS team meetings.
  • Collaborates with the CFLS team to plan Arapahoe Libraries early literacy initiatives.
  • Provides support for CFLS training initiatives.
  • Supports educator and caregiver reference and advisory services. Provides web content for Arapahoe Libraries website as needed.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Master's degree in the library and information studies field. Or the ability to obtain a master's degree in the library and information studies field within three years from the start of the program. An application to the library school must be made within six months of the date of hire.
  • Three to five years working in a library including experience working with children and families.
  • Experience with cross-department project initiatives.
  • Ability to work successfully and flexibly in teams across multiple departments.
  • Ability to work effectively with people of all ages and diverse backgrounds.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills and the ability to interact effectively with staff and patrons.
  • Ability to represent the Arapahoe Libraries and present information in a clear and engaging manner when working with community stakeholders and colleagues one-on-one or in group meetings, in formal and informal settings.
  • Ability to clearly convey and receive information and ideas through a variety of formats and communicate to others in a manner that engages the listener.
  • Advanced organizational skills.
  • Ability and willingness to support and conduct staff training as needed.
  • Experience with developing and facilitating meetings.
  • Ability to work effectively with a remote supervisor and staff in multiple locations.
  • Ability to hold themselves responsible in all work assignments and interactions.
  • Advanced technology skills with cloud computing, Windows, Word, Excel, Outlook and various performance suites and the ability to learn and apply new technologies quickly.
  • Ability to demonstrate initiative, to work independently under tight deadlines and prioritize various projects and requests. Evidence of ability to manage multiple responsibilities in a changing environment.
  • Willingness to participate in Family Place Libraries training.
  • Ability to demonstrate and apply knowledge and understanding of current early literacy research and best practices, including an understanding of early childhood learning theory and developmentally appropriate practice.
  • Experience and confidence in developing and conducting children's programming.
  • Confidence in communicating information about research-based early learning and literacy concepts, skills and practices with adults.
  • Ability to exhibit leadership skills including critical thinking, active listening, risk taking, and creativity.
  • Valid driver's license and with an acceptable driving record which meets District standards.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience conducting community outreach.
  • Experience and a strong interest in developing project management skills.
  • An understanding of Family Place Libraries and Every Child Ready to Read.
  • Advanced knowledge of developmentally appropriate learning toys and children's literature: board books, picture books, non-fiction books, chapter books.

Work Environment:

  • Moderate noise (computers, phones, printers, staff and patron interactions).
  • Ability to travel to various library locations and community outreach locations.
  • Ability to work varying shifts, including evenings and weekends.

Physical Activities:

Physical activities required to perform essential duties include:

  • Must be able to remain in a stationary position 50-75% of the time.
  • Must be able to move around 25-50% of the time.
  • Ability to lift up to 40 lbs.
  • Ability to carry up to 20 lbs.
  • Ability to push and pull a cart weighing up to 75 lbs.
  • Ability to kneel, crouch, reach and stoop 25% of the time.
