The Community

The library serves a diverse population from the City of Sarasota, Siesta Key, and the Town of Longboat Key, as well as seasonal visitors. Special Genealogy and Government Documents collections and the Music Archives draw patrons from throughout the region. The library staff welcomes approximately 500,000 visitors per year.

Since opening in 1976 on the Sarasota Bayfront, the library has served as a center for lifelong learning. Generous gifts from the William G. and Marie Selby Foundation secured the name, and made possible capital enhancements when the current two-story, 74,000 SF library opened in 1998.

The library hosts periodic art exhibits and features public art both inside and outside the building.  An arched saltwater aquarium serves as the entryway to the Youth Library, as the “Just Browsing” kinetic piece by Tim Prentice ripples in the rotunda. The bronze sculpture “Sharing” by Bruno Lucchesi depicts a family reading together.

The creative, dedicated Selby Library staff plans and presents numerous educational and enrichment programs, including author appearances, concerts and community events, such as the annual INSPIRESARASOTA! celebration of arts and culture. Many of the special events are developed in collaboration with community partners; this collaboration is a hallmark practice of the Sarasota County Public Libraries.

A 2011 renovation included the addition of a popular Teen Center, designed by teens for teens, and a reconfigured public computing space, group study room and the installation of an automated check-in/sorting conveyor system.

Through the years the Friends of the Library continue to champion excellent service through their generous support. Their gifts make possible outstanding programs for all ages. Fundraising activities conducted by the Friends include the management of a bookstore and the annual Crystal Ball. Loyal volunteers contribute 10,000 hours per year, assisting staff with day-to-day operations as well as special projects.
