The Elsie Quirk Public Library, located on historic Dearborn Street, celebrates 60 years! This branch has a very active and engaged friends group and is very community-oriented, participating in local festivals and events like the annual Lemon Bay Fest. 

Play a key role in supporting, coordinating, or leading library programs/projects, teaching, and coaching staff and citizens, providing customer service, conducting research, performing analytical type work, and coordinating collections. While the primary focus will be leadership in Youth Services, the librarian will also work with youth and adults in intergenerational programming. In the team environment, you will participate in setting unit, library, and system goals, and contribute to decision-making and evaluation of progress.

Communication, Programming & Outreach

Promote understanding and use of the library and resources.

Prepare reviews, press releases, bibliographies, and other promotional displays.

Create displays and offer outreach services.

Plan and direct adult programming.

Analyze and identify service population needs and develop plans to meet those needs.

Network with other agencies to provide and obtain materials and services.

Represent the library and library interests within the community.

Participate in the presentation and development of technology training and information literacy programs for staff and patrons.

Participate in ad-hoc/one-on-one training of customers in the use of library technology.

Collection Development & Maintenance

Assist with collection development by recommending materials.

Participate in collection maintenance, including, shelving, shifting, and weeding.

Administration

Compile, report, and interpret statistics.

Contribute to the development and implementation of system-wide reference services and programs.

Order supplies, prepare work schedules, receive and check-in periodicals and newspapers.

About You

Minimum Qualifications:

Master's degree in Library Science from a college or university accredited by the American Library Association (ALA) or the Chartered Institute of Library and Information Science Professionals (CILIP)

- OR - Bachelor’s degree and enrolled in an MLS/MLIS program with the ability to obtain an MLS/MLIS within 12 months of hire

Valid Florida Driver's License by date of hire

Preferred Qualifications:

One (1) year of experience in a library environment

Above average customer service skills, ability to multitask, ability to adapt to various and changing duties as required.

Skill in operating library technologies of all sorts.  Skill in using various electronic devices, including, but not limited to Kindle, Nook, tablets, and iPads and imparting this knowledge to customers of all ages. Ability to train/coach patrons in the use of technology.

The Community

The 17,000 square foot Elsie Quirk Library is located on West Dearborn Street in Olde Englewood Village.  Dearborn Street is home to a variety of shops, galleries, eateries, and many local events such as the Farmers Market, the Cruizin on Dearborn car show, and the Fourth of July festivities.  The library plays an important role in the community traditions and local events.

With the completion of the 2010 renovation project, the interior offers cozy seating spaces, a large 99 seat meeting room, a conference room, and dedicated Teen and Children’s spaces.  In celebration of the 50th Anniversary, the Friends of the Elsie Quirk Library added a charming Reading Garden.

Library staff offers a robust selection of programs for all ages which are well attended and numerous community organizations use the meeting rooms. A “small town library” with enthusiastic staff and an engaged customers within walking and biking distance of historic neighborhoods, restaurants, parks and shops.
