Job Description

The Jamestown Philomenian Library is seeking to fill the newly developed position of full-time Community Services Librarian. This professional position reports to the JPL Director.

We are looking for an enthusiastic individual who is creative, detail-oriented, and enjoys working with people of all ages.

The ideal candidate for this position will instruct the public and staff in the use of the library collections and a wide variety of information tools and resources in all formats. Participating in community outreach, delivering library classes, programs, and services are integral features of this position.

This is a full-time position (40 hours per week) with some nights and weekends required

Salary: $48,000 plus excellent benefits

Essential Functions

·         Plans, promotes, implements, and evaluates programming to enrich the lives and meet the diverse needs of community members, both individually and in concert with the Friends of the JPL

·         Maintains the library website and social media platforms

·         Creates the library newsletter, JPL Weekly, for publication and distribution

·         Provides instruction in the use of information tools to adult patrons, via one-on-one sessions and larger classes

·         Provides readers advisory and assists with research and reference requests of adult patrons

·         Manages interlibrary loan requests

·         Checks and responds to meeting room requests from patrons and organizations

·         Chooses films for movie matinees according to budget and availability and runs them for the public

·         Runs a monthly book club on topic/genre of his/her/their choice

·         Coordinates the Museum passes program with the Friends of the JPL

·         Assists with training and supervising of part-time staff and adult volunteers

·         Responsible for the Adult department as a whole in the absence of the Director

Other Responsibilities

·         Visits community organizations and non-profits to collaborate on programming and services

·         Represents the library and participates in outreach efforts, as needed

·         Assists in promoting library use, both in person and digitally, by creating attractive promotional materials in conjunction with the Youth Services Associate

·         Keeps current with new trends in library planning and services

·         Meets with other library staff and outside organizations in order to coordinate activities and exchange information

·         Attends professional development and participates in professional organizations

·         Catalogs and processes library collections, as needed

·         Assists other librarians with programs and special projects

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

·         Has earned a Masters of Library and Information Services (or working toward degree) from an ALA-accredited program

·         Possesses the required knowledge, abilities, and skills to work in a public library, and/or ability and willingness to learn them

·         Listens to, understands, and interprets the concerns of patrons

·         Practices independent judgment and make good decisions when resolving problems relating to patrons/public

·         Works independently and in a group environment

·         Possesses exemplary customer service skills; comfortable working with the public in busy situations

·         Understands the needs and abilities of adults and seniors

·         Has the ability to administer programs and activities for adults

·         Feels comfortable with establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with superiors, subordinates, associates, officials of other agencies and the general public

·         Is accurate, thorough and timely in the completion of work assignments

·         Possesses creativity, planning, and organizational skills

·         Employs effective written and oral communication skills

·         Has excellent computer skills required. Koha experience preferred but not required. Must be familiar with trends in technology

The Community

Jamestown, RI is a small island community of 5,500 residents. The population increases in the summertime with seasonal residents and visitors. There is one elementary school and one middle school on the island; students attend either Narragansett High School or North Kingstown High School (or one of the many area private schools).
