Job Description

Engineering a world of possibilities

The Arthur Lakes Library at the Colorado School of Mines (Mines) is hiring for a University Librarian.

The University Librarian at Mines is a dynamic leader, responsible for overseeing all aspects of the university's library in alignment with Mines strategic goals. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in academic library management, a deep appreciation for STEM disciplines, and a vision for advancing the library's role in supporting research, teaching, and learning across campus. The Executive Director of the university’s Museum of Earth Sciences reports to the University Librarian.

Responsibilities

The University Librarian works effectively in a collaborative environment within the department, with other Mines leaders, and with external partners to accomplish the following:

  • Provide leadership which enhances the mission and activities of the department by overseeing a vision and strategy, strengthening library impact, and fostering collaboration with other programs on campus.
  • Align the department with the university’s goals, strategic initiatives, and its STEM focus.
  • Oversee management and assessment of the department, with budgetary responsibilities for the library’s operations.
  • Promote and advocate for the Museum of Earth Sciences within the university and to outside organizations.
  • Promote and support continued professional growth of library faculty and staff in the areas of professional education and training, research, and applied knowledge.
  • Oversee recruitment and retention of exceptional library faculty and staff.
  • Cultivate an outstanding physical and virtual environment for library users.
  • Foster a climate that supports and celebrates diversity, inclusion, and access.
  • Represent the Library and Museum to the administration and university, and to public and private agencies at the local, regional, national, and international levels.
  • Lead efforts in fundraising, alumni engagement, and external support for the Library.

Minimum Qualifications

The University Librarian is appointed at the rank of full Librarian in the department. Therefore, a master’s degree in library and information science from an ALA-accredited institution or equivalent degree, with a distinguished record of accomplishment in professional responsibilities, scholarship/teaching, and service is required. In addition, a qualified candidate will have demonstrated:

  • Progressive experience in academic library administration, including leadership and advancing library goals.
  • Evidence of successful implementation of organizational, budget management, and personnel skills.
  • Record of operating in a collaborative, transparent, and collegial manner.
  • Commitment to advancing diversity, inclusion, and access.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Education in STEM or experience working in a STEM-focused environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with university administration, faculty, staff, students, and the public.
  • Demonstrated ability to engage librarians and staff in successful teamwork, collaborative planning, and the delivery of user-centered services.
  • Understanding of the role of the academic library in teaching, research, and resource management, and of librarians as faculty.
  • Record of supporting employee growth and development.
  • Experience with project management, data-informed decision making, and long-range planning.
  • Demonstrated success fostering collaborations and resource sharing in library communities.
  • Record of successful fundraising.
  • Informed understanding of the role of museums in an academic environment.

Salary:

For this position, Mines is offering salary rate of $167,000 - $211,000
