Job Description

The Katharine Brush Library at The Loomis Chaffee School in Windsor, Connecticut is searching for a Public Services Library Assistant. The qualified candidate will be a collaborative, student-focused professional with strong organizational skills. The primary responsibility of this position will be interacting with and assisting the Loomis community at the library circulation desk and monitoring students. Secondary responsibility will be managing the periodical collection and interlibrary loan services. This position includes working Sunday evening and, ideally, an additional evening per week.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Serve at the circulation desk, assist library patrons, and monitor students, including during evening student hall
  • Answer patron questions concerning library resources and services, including use of the library catalog
  • Manage the print periodicals collection, including acquisitions, organization, and development
  • Maintains interlibrary loan requests though OCLC WorldShare, including placing interlibrary loan requests for the Loomis community, processing interlibrary loan arrivals, and returning interlibrary loans to the appropriate library
  • Under the direction of the librarians, perform collection maintenance, including shelving library material, shelf-reading, shifting, and deaccessioning
  • Special projects or tasks assigned as necessary as they pertain to the goals and objectives of the library

Qualifications and Skills

  • A four-year bachelor’s degree or equivalent 
  • Previous experience in a public, academic, or school library
  • Positive attitude, strong customer service skills, attention to detail, and an ability to work independently as well as in a team
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work in a diverse, collaborative environment and interact effectively with faculty, staff, colleagues, and academically motivated high school students
  • Experience using an integrated library system 
  • Experience using an interlibrary loan program, such as OCLC WorldShare
  • Fluency with Microsoft Office
