Job Description

Job Summary:

The Library Assistant provides excellent customer service to diverse and geographically dispersed users which include University faculty, staff, students and community members. This position is part of the Access Services team, which is responsible for enabling physical access to university library collections and library spaces. This department is responsible for services relating to circulation, reserves, stacks management, interlibrary/intercampus loan, and space management. This position is cross-trained on functional areas within the department. The position requires a sophisticated competence in various computer systems, including Innovative Interfaces (Sierra), Ares, ILLiad, OCLC, Swift, and Prospector. Maintains the order of the building and is responsible for the opening or closure of the library. Mediates stressful situations related to patron concerns. Provides customer service to colleagues within the department and across other library departments. Contributes to a collaborative team environment. This position is 0.75 FTE and is responsible for opening the building Tuesday to Friday.

Performs related duties as necessary to support the Regis mission.

Performs other duties as assigned.

Monitors alarm systems for library collections and building security and communicates with security personnel when necessary.

Ensures patron safety by identifying emergency situations and notifying authorities, notifying patrons and/or clearing the building as necessary.

Shelves and shifts books, newspapers and periodicals, and maintains orderliness of library.

Assists with the recruitment, training and supervision of student assistants

Instructs patrons on locating books, periodicals, and government documents using the library catalog.

Screens and answers or refers inquiries, in person and over email, chat, and the telephone, as appropriate.

Evaluates and processes reserves and resource sharing requests: conducts bibliographic verification and database searching; photocopies, scans and downloads articles; orders materials not owned by Regis; processes materials for mailing; sends materials to patrons.

Experience:

2 years experience with a circulation and interlibrary loan module of an automated library system preferred.

Demonstrated computer skills and willingness to learn new skills and/or technologies.

Demonstrated ability to work effectively with a diverse clientele.

Ability to maintain poise while effectively managing a multi-task operation.

Evidence of excellent communication skills, both oral and written.

Previous experience working with the public and demonstrated interest in providing excellent service to patrons/customers.

High School Diploma or GED required. Bachelor’s degree preferred.
