Job Description

The Florissant Service Guide must be available to work independently and on a varying schedule, Monday through Friday from 9:45 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., and Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Saturdays are required.

Fair Labor Standards Act: Non-Exempt (hourly pay), Part-time (under 32 hours) to Full-time (more than 32 hours) Compensation Range: $18 to $20 per hour. If a Service Guide is over 32 hours, that person qualifies for vacation, medical, and other benefits.  All employees receive sick & personal and retirement benefits (PERA). 

Scope of the Position: The Guide provides outstanding experiences to library members and visitors through proactive circulation, reader’s advisory, reference, technology, and activity services. They have a passion for making library use the best part of every customer’s day in all library departments. Through a combination of knowledge, approachability, innovation, curiosity, and collaboration, the Guide works with a fantastic team of colleagues to provide individuals and communities with optimal library value. Success in this position depends on willingness to grow and adapt to meet the dynamic needs of users, as well as a desire to guide patrons via processing, circulation, children’s, teen, and adult areas. The Guide will rotate to different service areas throughout the day, which makes for a dynamic work life with ample opportunities to build patron relationships and grow in their library skills.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provides outstanding experiences and services to colleagues, citizens, and communities.
  • Performs processing, circulation, technology, information, reader’s advisory, and—occasionally—activity services (with assistance from the Activity Coordinator)
  • Serves as a library representative and liaison to RLD communities
  • Seeks partnerships and ways to build rapport with communities and users
  • Enthusiastically collaborates with staff, administration, management, and stakeholders
  • Improves skills and knowledge by participating in professional development
  • Uses, and contributes to effective dialog about, policy and procedure to maximize positive experiences for the majority of patrons and staff
  • Promotes services through many mediums in conjunction with Community Relations
  • Assists other staff with various projects or functions as needed
  • Performs other duties as outlined by departmental managers

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree preferred; library science degree strongly preferred
  • Two years of demonstrated customer or public service excellence required, with library experience strongly preferred
  • Any combination of analogous experience, education, and skills which would make a worker successful at this position

Work Environment and Physical Demands

  • Frequent computer use
  • Frequent contact with the public
  • Ability to lift, reach, carry, push, pull, bend, and stoop. Must be able to lift up to 40 pounds
  • Ability to push and shift wheeled carts up to 50 pounds
  • Ability to work throughout the library, in a variety of functions and departments
  • Ability to travel to and from work independently in all types of weather conditions

Benefits & Additional Compensation Info

RLD participates in the PERA retirement plan. Through PERA, we also offer individual, spouse, and family, medical, dental, and vision insurance plans to those who work more than 32 (full time) hours. RLD covers 50% of insurance premiums for these plans. In addition to sick and personal time off above and beyond legal mandates, RLD offers vacation time to full-timers as well. RLD works with each employee to accommodate a work and life balance by flexing within the parameters of service schedules.
