Job Description

The Arapahoe Library District is looking to hire Barista / Library Specialists Blended to join our teams at Koelbel Library and Smoky Hill Library. Title: Barista / Library Specialist Blended Role

Location: Smoky Hill Library, 5430 S. Biscay Circle Centennial, CO 80015 & Koelbel Library, 5955 S. Holly Street Centennial, CO 80121

Reports to: Supervisor

Position: Non-exempt 30 hours per week. Flexible availability is required including evenings and weekends.

Pay Rate: $18.50 - $21.45

Purpose: Welcome and assist patrons in the use of the library by delivering outstanding and inclusive service and deliver an outstanding patron experience by providing fast, friendly cafe service and consistent, quality products. This role is responsible for performing all job duties in a manner consistent with Arapahoe Libraries brand and maintaining all food safety and sanitation standards while keeping current with internal communications and library offerings in order to connect patrons with the appropriate resources.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

75% CUSTOMER SERVICE AND CAFE OPERATIONS

CUSTOMER SERVICE

  • Greet and connect with each patron
  • Solicit orders, enter sales, and process payments in a timely and friendly fashion
  • Manage cash drawer, following established cash handling procedures
  • Serve customer orders according to recipe and aesthetic guidelines
  • Follow and promote High Quality Standards in all drink and food preparation
  • Deliver products within established speed of service guidelines and identify drink upon delivery
  • Demonstrate genuine appreciation to each customer
  • Receive catering orders, sell gift cards and merchandise

OPERATIONS

  • Operate and maintain cleanliness of cafe equipment
  • Optimize workflow efficiency by restocking workstation, food, and supplies
  • Follow and complete daily duty checklists
  • Maintain cleanliness of workstation and patron areas
  • Follow closing and opening procedures for beginning and end of day cash counts
  • Ensure a healthy and safe environment by following sanitation regulations health code requirements

25% LIBRARY PATRON ASSISTANCE, MATERIALS HANDLING, AND LEARNING AND DEVELOPMENT

General patron assistance:

  • Greets all library visitors and provides proactive assistance
  • Assists patrons with library account inquiries, including cash register transactions
  • Provides advisory services to patrons
  • Assists patrons with basic reference questions
  • Connects patrons with other library staff as needed
  • Promotes and supports library resources, programs and events
  • Listens to patron feedback and shares through appropriate channels
  • Sets expectations for library use, de-escalates and resolves patron concerns
  • Straightens and cleans up the library to provide a welcoming experience

Technology assistance:

  • Assists patrons with basic technology and troubleshooting questions, including assistance with tablets, phones and other devices
  • Assists patrons with library technology offerings, such as e-books and online databases
  • Troubleshoots library technology and equipment, such as copiers and printers
  • Assists patrons with reservable spaces, including basic AV equipment support
  • Connects patrons with other library staff as needed for intermediate and advanced technology needs

Materials handling:

  • Helps manage library materials collection
  • Merchandizes library materials and maintains library displays
  • Processes and shelves library materials and patron holds

Learning and Development:

  • Keeps current on new library resources, trends, technology and offerings 
  • Takes initiative to consistently update skills to effectively assist patrons
  • Keeps up to date on internal communication and information to effectively assist patrons and co-workers
  • Promotes positive relationships with co-workers and collaborates with others to meet the needs of staff and patrons
  • Provides ongoing and regular feedback and observations to supervisors

Performs other related duties as assigned and requested.

Other Duties and Responsibilities:

  • May participate on library committees or special work groups
  • May assist Friends volunteers with cash handling and queries
  • May participate in the creation of displays

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Twelve months of customer service experience.
  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Intermediate technology skills, such as file management, file sharing, word processing, internet and website navigation, etc.
  • Ability to work varying shifts, including evenings and weekends.
  • Ability to adapt to changing scheduling needs.
  • Ability to receive feedback and make positive changes.
  • Ability to respond to change with a positive attitude and a willingness to learn new ways.
  • Ability to use conflict resolution strategies to respond to customer interactions.
  • Ability to maintain a positive, friendly demeanor and remain calm under pressure.
  • Ability to professionally and calmly de-escalate situations.
  • Ability to travel between facilities.
  • Ability to work varying shifts, including evenings and weekends. 
  • Ability to demonstrate curiosity in the vast technological and online resources the library has to offer and comfortable learning side by side with patrons. 
  • Ability to communicate new ideas, products and services in a positive and engaging manner. 
  • Demonstrate enthusiasm for an environment of constant change. 
  • Ability to work with people of all ages and diverse backgrounds.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Six months of similar or related drink preparation experience.
  • Experience working with a Cash Register.
  • Experience working with children and teens

Work Environment:

  • The essential duties for this position are performed in an indoor cafe and library environment.
  • Moderate noise (espresso machines, phones, computers, printers, music and patron interactions).
  • Ability to work in confined areas.
  • Ability to work varying shifts, including evenings and weekends.

Physical Activities:

  • Physical activities required to perform essential duties include:
  • Must be able to remain in a stationary position 25-50%of the time.
  • Must be able to move around 50-75% of the time.
  • Ability to lift up to 40 lbs
  • Ability to carry up to 25 lbs
  • Ability to push and pull a cart weighing up to 40 lbs
  • Ability to kneel, crouch, reach and stoop 25% of the time.
  • Use of hands required, with repetitive motion.
  • Use of hands, fingers, and grasping of books, DVD's are required, with repetitive motion
  • Long periods of standing required
  • Bending, grasping, stretching without limitations which includes reaching into bins for materials, moving bins and carts filled with materials, shelving and shifting materials at various height levels.
  • Lifting above your waist, head etc. up to 15 lbs.
