About the University of Missouri Journalism Library and the School of Journalism

The Journalism Library, part of the MU Libraries system, serves as a comprehensive academic center for the School of Journalism. In 1908, Walter Williams created the world’s first School of Journalism at the University of Missouri. In 1909, his wife, Sara Lockwood Williams, followed suit by creating the world’s first Journalism Library. From our humble beginnings as a collection of 92 books loaned out from a single room, we have grown into a collection of over 30,000 print materials, hundreds of thousands of materials available digitally, and a beautiful 2-floor information commons located within the Reynolds Journalism Institute.

The Missouri School of Journalism is routinely recognized as one of the top journalism schools in the world, offering Bachelor’s, Master’s, and Doctoral degrees in Journalism and Strategic Communication. The School of Journalism is widely known for their “Missouri Method”, inspired by Walter Williams’ belief that the best way to learn about journalism and advertising is to practice them. As part of the degree program requirements, every School of Journalism student will staff a professional media outlet and gain real-world experience. The eight media outlets associated with the School of Journalism include the Columbia Missourian, a community newspaper; Vox, a cross-platform magazine; KOMU-TV 8, an NBC affiliate broadcast station; KBIA 91.3 FM, an NPR member radio station; Missouri Business Alert, a digital newsroom covering local business news; Global Journalist, a converged newsroom covering issues of free speech and free press across the world; AdZou, a strategic communication agency; and MOJO Ad, an advertising agency.

The MU Libraries belong to the Association of Research Libraries (ARL), the Greater Western Library Alliance (GWLA), and the statewide MOBIUS consortium.
