Job Description
The Pine Plains Free Library is looking for an innovative, creative Library Director to lead the Library into its next 225 years of service to the Pine Plains community.
Pine Plains Free Library serves a rural community with a population of 2,200 in northern Dutchess County. Pine Plains is the home to the Pine Plains Central School District, The Stissing Center, and numerous local businesses. The Pine Plains Free Library is a municipal library situated a short distance from the center of town with five (5) member staff and an annual operating budget of just under $200,000.
Duties:
- Develops and implements programs and policies with the approval of the Board of Trustees;
- Develops and administers the library budget, including the obtaining and administering of grants;
- Plans and supervises the work of library employees;
- Prepares state, local, and other statistical or narrative reports as requested or as required;
- Performs collection development by choosing and administering the purchase of library materials that best meet the needs of clientele;
- Provides reference and reader’s advisory services and instruction to library users;
- Performs original cataloging classification and record editing;
- Performs online database searches and search training;
- Designs and produces public relations and library instruction material;
- Represents the library before governmental agencies and community groups in seeking financial resources for the library;
- Supervises the maintenance of library property and recommends repairs, alterations, and new construction;
- Keeps informed of professional developments through participation in professional organizations, system meetings, workshops, continuing education, and reading professional material.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Completion of bachelor’s degree in literature, business, or a related field.
- At least one year of library experience.
- Ability to obtain Master’s degree in Library Science (MLS or MLIS) within 24 months of hire.
- Must be able to pass a criminal background screening.
Preferred Qualifications:
- A Master’s degree in Librarianship or a closely related degree from a library school that is accredited by the American Library Association or recognized by the N.Y.S. Education Department.
- New York State Professional Librarian Certificate.
- 2 years of professional library experience.
Salary and Benefits:
- Starting salary of $45,000 to $50,000; 40 hours per week
- Two weeks paid sick leave, two weeks paid vacation leave (vacation can be used after 6 months of hire), and paid holidays.
