Job Description

Job Summary: The Facilities Technician II maintains and improves library facilities, building systems, and grounds for the Boulder Public Library District. They effectively collaborate with colleagues to achieve desired outputs and outcomes for the organization at library facilities. They serve as the facilities lead worker and Facilities Supervisor in the absence of the Facilities Operations and Maintenance Manager. Their stewardship positively impacts library operations and the employee and customer experience.

Essential Functions:

  • Serves as the facilities lead worker, directing and coaching Facilities Technician I team members. (20%)
  • Applies industry best practices, adheres to applicable code requirements, and follows industry standard procedures of construction trades, such as plumbing, HVAC (DDC), electrical, carpentry, painting, and mechanical systems, including materials and tools when diagnosing and troubleshooting facilities and building system issues in a courteous and timely manner. Identifies and implements appropriate course of action, prepares for, and completes tasks, and cleans-up work area leaving it in better condition than before. (20%)
  • Maintains current facilities and building system service and repair records and accurate preventative maintenance checklists used by the team. (15%)
  • Maintains inventory and orderly storage of building supplies, equipment parts, chemicals and supplies, and complies and submits orders to supervisor. (15%)
  • Serves as an expert to repair and maintain library automated materials handling equipment. Practices standard safety precautions while performing maintenance and when assisting with repair and maintenance of electrical and mechanical equipment. Operates and uses tools and equipment appropriately and safely. Uses appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) as required by industry safety standards. (15%)
  • Performs basic repairs and replacement of parts, including but not limited to: patching and painting, basic plumbing and toilet repair, basic electrical work, light bulb and battery replacement, furniture repair, maintenance of locks, door hardware, and key inventory, and carpet tile replacement. (15%)

Additional Responsibilities:

  • As assigned, performs on-call 24/7 to response to assist with emergency situations.
  • Monitors and recommends organizational response to severe weather, facilities health and safety and utility service disruption situations.
  • Ensures that communications, procedures, and standards are documented and that changes are communicated to staff and patrons in a timely manner.
  • Maintains up to date OSHA Bloodborne Pathogen training and/or certification.

This position is a full-time, 40-hour per week position.

Requirements

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Education and experience: High School Diploma and a minimum of three years of commercial construction or commercial facility maintenance experience, or equivalent combination of education, training and work experience.
  • Technical skills: Proficiency with Microsoft Office. Proven skill with reading and interpreting blueprints, construction/architectural drawings, and building system schematics and plans. Physical dexterity and strength to safely use manual tools and power tools common in construction trades.
  • Valid Colorado Driver’s license, clean driving record and reliable method of transportation.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Some training or work experience in electrical, plumbing or HVAC trades.
  • Proven current working knowledge of building maintenance and construction and safety standards.
  • Demonstrated strong communication, organizational, time management and strategic thinking skills.
  • Spanish language skills and/or experience working with patrons from a variety of ethnic and cultural backgrounds.

Work Environment:

Work is conducted in a variety of settings, including a typical office that provides comfortable lighting, temperature, and air conditions and regularly requires working in construction or repair areas that may include noise, cleaning chemicals, or other hazards. Work requires the ability to sit and use a computer or standard office equipment for extended periods, the ability to stand for extended periods of time and use of tools, electrical and motorized equipment on a frequent basis. Tasks require the ability to reach, bend, climb, twist, squat and/or assume awkward positions and the ability to lift up to 65 pounds. 

Work environment involves everyday risks or discomforts that require normal safety precautions typical of such places as offices or meeting rooms, e.g. use of safe workplace practices with office equipment, and/or avoidance of trips and falls and observance of fire regulations. Position also requires exposure to potential hazards, including heights, electrical and chemical hazards. Position requires working in all exterior weather conditions.
