Job Description

BiblioTemps® is an employment service of the Massachusetts Library System that provides experienced library workers for temporary placements in public, academic, and special libraries throughout Massachusetts.

Title:                Community Services Librarian

Location:         Olin College of Engineering (Needham, MA)

Start date:       As soon as possible

End date:         May 17, 2024

Schedule:         Monday – Friday, 40 hours per week

Pay Rate:         $20.75 - $24.00 per hour, based on experience

Position Summary: 

The Community Services Librarian supports research and resource success at Olin College. Reporting to the Library Director, the Community Services Librarian enables, maintains, assesses, and seeks to improve all library electronic resources and platforms. Because of the small size of the library staff, self-direction, tolerance for ambiguity, comfort with asking for help, and a willingness to jump in wherever needed are all essential qualities to succeed in this position. 

This is an in-person/on-campus position based in Needham, MA, with possible flexible work options. 

Responsibilities: 

Electronic Resource Management

  • Maintain updates to Library-subscribed e-resource products, including troubleshooting, organizing, and maintaining discoverability, products including:
    • ILS and discovery platform
    • The Phoenix Files, Olin’s digital institutional repository
    • LibGuides
    • Individual academic databases
  • Works with the Director to update library website content and design (HTML, CSS, Javascript) as needed.
  • Work closely with library colleagues and vendors to ensure that all types of collections are readily discoverable and accessible, online and in the library, in a timely manner.
  • Collaborate with colleagues and vendors for troubleshooting and assists users by troubleshooting electronic resource problems.
  • Works with the Library Director to establish effective working relationships with technical contacts at vendors, publishers, and interface providers as they relate to timely provision of information, including problem solving, assessment, and service monitoring; ensures data integrity across platforms.
  • Coordinates electronic subscription changes and renewals with the Library Director.
  • Continuously develops an in-depth and ongoing understanding of the College (curriculum, mission, and culture), as well as literary and publishing fields (academic & popular works, open-access, open educational resources, etc.), user experience design and research, and general library trends in acquisitions, discovery, and electronic resources.
  • Co-manages the collection of statistics and other reports that capture data needed for management related to collections, acquisitions, and external reporting throughout the fiscal year.

Academic Support

  • Assists the course reserves process, including faculty communication, physical and digital acquisitions, cataloging, and maintaining reserves lists in the integrated library system (ILS).
  • Provides research assistance and reference help, including instruction sessions as appropriate.
  • Creates and maintains online research instruction resources.
  • Supports the use of the Library of Things collection and makerspace equipment.

Acquisitions & Interlibrary Loan

  • Provides interlibrary loan services and fulfills interlibrary loan requests, including paging and delivery to other Minuteman libraries.
  • Co-manages the acquisitions process, including purchase requests and cataloging/technical services. Evaluates, maintains, and weeds the physical and digital collections as needed to ensure resources are relevant to the academic and cultural missions of the college.
  • Makes informed acquisition suggestions based on in-depth and ongoing understanding of the school (curriculum, mission, and culture), as well as the literary and publishing fields (academic & popular works, open-access, open educational resources, etc.), and trends in acquisitions, discovery, and electronic resources.

Community Engagement

  • Helps support and co-supervise a peer-training group of students with knowledge of specialized library equipment.
  • Develops and organizes resource documentation and training to educate community and colleagues as appropriate.
  • Represents the library at events and committee meetings as needed.
  • As appropriate, works with other academic and consortium libraries (BOW, Minuteman), as well as other communities of practice, to understand their resources and services, streamline relationships, and ensure the highest quality service to the Olin community.
  • Proactively seeks professional development and networking opportunities.
  • Assists with maintaining the physical space of the library, including shelving books, watering plants, creating/designing signage and wayfinding, and keeping an orderly, clean, and safe environment.

Experience and Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in library science and 2+ years of relevant library experience.
    • Current MLS/MLIS students and recent graduates welcome to apply.
