
Position Overview
Practical work experience in a public library. Plan, set up, and conduct children’s library events, passive programming and summer reading. Offer reader's advisory and other library services at the children's service desk, organize and shelve library materials, create props for story times. Recommend library books and materials for acquisition or deletion to a librarian. Assist with marketing of programs to promote services for children.
Accountability: Children’s Librarian or Branch Manager
Hours of Work: Hourly, Part Time [10–12 weeks, 15-19 hours/week]
Work Environment
- Performs work under typical library conditions
- Position regularly interacts with other personnel and the public
- Operates computers and other standard office equipment
- Activities for children and families may be inside or outside
Qualifications, Education, Experience, and Skills
Enrolled in a Library and Information Science graduate program with coursework in children’s or teen literature AND coursework in programming and storytelling. Interest in working with children. Experience with public speaking and customer service. Familiarity with public library services. Bilingual Spanish language skills are preferred.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Conduct story times and other children's programs as assigned
Select appropriate books, songs, puppets, fingerplays, etc.
Prepare crafts
Incorporate and inform caregivers about early literacy practices
Provide assistance and instruction to patrons in choosing books and other materials for borrowing
Perform general library work as needed, participating in serving on service desks, assisting patrons, shelving, and answering phone calls
Benefits
All employees accrue paid leave upon hire. Temporary employees accrue one hour of paid leave for every 30 hours worked up to 48 hours per year for various health- and safety-related needs.
