Job Description

Title: REFERENCE LIBRARIAN Kelver and Davies Libraries

Location: Kelver Library, 404 E. Front Street, Byers, CO 80103 & Davies Library, 2nd Avenue Deer Trail, CO 80105

Reports to: Branch Manager

FLSA Status: Exempt, full-time 40 hours per week.

Pay Rate: $55,000 - $62,920

Purpose: Serves as a District resource to provide library services and access to information for youth, teens, and adults at the Kelver and Davies Libraries. Identifies and interprets user needs; provides reference, advisory, programming and referral services to Library patrons directly, as well as by telephone; assists patrons with material selection and technology; collaborates with branch staff to build positive relationships with the Byers and Deer Trail School Districts. Serves as an internal training resource and provides mentorship. Reference Librarians are a part of the branch leadership team and support Supervisor by acting as a Person-in-Charge (PIC). This position requires a commitment to equity, diversity and inclusion frameworks to evaluate and improve all areas of their work.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

40% PROGRAMMING, OUTREACH, AND VOLUNTEER SUPPORT

May develop and teach computer classes and other programs for all ages relevant to the Byers and Deer Trail communities, provides after-hours and other programming support to CFLS and IS Librarians and Events and Community Engagement Departments. Collaborates with branch staff to assist with or develop programs that meet community interests and needs. Collaborates with branch staff to build relationships with local schools. Collaborates with Branch Supervisor to serve as a backup for engaging with community partners. May coordinate/support coordination of adult and teen volunteers at assigned locations working closely with District Volunteer Coordinator and branch staff. May participate in outreach activities.

30% PATRON SERVICES:

Offers in person advisory, technology and reference services, conducts Ask-a-Librarian sessions, answers phone hunt group questions, provides computer and technology support to patrons; provides floor coverage as needed. Provides technical/reference support to paraprofessional staff. May participate in district-wide projects and operations, e.g., Summer Reading program, committees work, etc.

20% TEAM LEADERSHIP AND MENTORING:

Oversees opening and closing procedures, de-escalates and handles challenging situations involving staff and/or patrons, schedules staff, gets staff coverage as needed, prioritizes daily work as needed.

Mentors staff by offering shadowing/consulting opportunities. Develops the knowledge, skill and ability of staff by providing training, mentoring and shadowing in order expand their ability to serve patrons.

10% PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT:

Advances professional knowledge and networking through attending professional conferences and keeping up-to-date with the current professional trends. Share the knowledge with coworkers.

Performs other related duties as assigned and requested.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Master's degree in the library or information services field in hand or obtained within three years from the start of the program (application to library school must take place within six months from date of hire).
  • Ability to demonstrate knowledge of library and information science theory, information creation, organization, and delivery as it applies to the Arapahoe Library District.
  • Ability to exhibit strong customer service skills.
  • Ability to work with a remote team.
  • Ability to demonstrate initiative and to work independently under tight deadlines and prioritize various projects and requests.
  • Ability to successfully collaborate with a variety of individuals with competing priorities.
  • Ability to successfully work with varying demographics.
  • Intermediate to advanced technology skills with cloud computing, various operating systems (such as Windows, IOS, Android, etc.) and various performance suites (such as MS Office, iWork, Google Suite, etc.) and an ability to learn and apply new technologies quickly.
  • Ability to comfortably present information in a clear and engaging manner in dealing with customers and colleagues one-on-one or in groups, in both formal and informal settings.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with providing reference, technology and advisory services.
  • Spanish language skills.

Work Environment:

  • The essential duties for this position are performed in an indoor office environment.
  • Moderate noise (computers, phones, printers and patron interactions).
  • Ability to work in confined areas.
  • Ability to travel to various facilities as needed.
  • Ability to work varying shifts, including evenings and weekends.

Physical Activities:

Physical activities required to perform essential duties include:

Must be able to remain in a stationary position 75-100%of the time.

Must be able to move around 50-75% of the time.

Ability to lift to 40 lbs.

Ability to carry up to 20 lbs.

Ability to push and pull a cart weighing up to 75 lbs.

Ability to kneel, crouch, reach and stoop 25% of the time.
