Job Description

Job Summary: 

The Collection Development Librarian selects and maintains the library’s physical and digital collections according to the Collection Development Policy. They lead by example not only in providing excellent customer service, but also in displaying and promoting physical and digital collections that are attractive and relevant to the community. They respond to patron requests for assistance related to library collections and act as a resource by providing classroom training and on-the-job coaching to their colleagues, as well as troubleshooting issues with library resources. They serve as Manager on Duty, responding to security incidents and patron issues and providing leadership to security and public service staff regarding enforcement of library policies and procedures.

Essential Functions:

  • Selects materials for purchase in physical and digital formats by reviewing industry news, vendor selection lists, bestseller lists, journal reviews, patron requests, staff suggestions, and collection analysis results. Orders materials in areas of specialization to meet community demand, staying within the budget. (30%)
  • Analyzes and evaluates reports for areas of specialization and identifies materials for removal or replacement based on criteria in the Collection Development Policy. Directs staff and volunteers assisting with weeding projects in assigned areas. Assists with all aspects of weeding. (25%)
  • Collaborates with colleagues to plan services, programs, or events to further library priorities. Represents department on committees based on library business needs and individual interest. Leads cross-department initiatives for special projects. (15%)
  • Acts as a resource for colleagues by providing reference consultation, mentoring, and training in digital media technology, reference topics, and readers advisory services. Presents training classes in both physical and virtual classroom environments. (10%)
  • Models customer service philosophy and library values with patron interactions. Serves as Manager on Duty during assigned shifts, monitoring use of library spaces, de-escalating incidents, and coordinating responses with security and other managers. (10%)

Additional Responsibilities: 

  • Coordinates merchandising and display of library materials to facilitate patron access and highlight diversity in the collections.
  • Develops and maintains online content related to collection development and readers advisory for assigned sections of the library’s website.
  • Selects and maintains titles in assigned areas in the library’s Core Collections database, ensuring titles of enduring importance and popularity within the community are maintained in the district’s physical and digital collections.
  • Gathers information about new formats, resources, and collection additions to educate staff so they may assist patrons with accessing library resources. Contributes items about relevant book and media industry news and information about library collections and resources to staff and patron newsletters.
  • Evaluates current and emerging technologies for delivery of library services and provides recommendations about the need and application for such services.
  • Participates in professional development opportunities with emphasis upon trends and issues relating to collection development, library technologies, and intellectual freedom.

Minimum Qualifications:             

  • Education and experience – master's degree in library science or related field and three years of experience working in a public library, or any equivalent combination of education and experience. Experience with searching and using vendor-provided library resources on the web.
  • General skills – Demonstrated experience with establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with skill in conflict resolution and problem solving. Skilled with analyzing information for accuracy and organizing information and materials in a logical manner. Self-directed and able to concentrate on tasks in a busy, open environment.
  • Collaboration – Skilled at effectively managing a variety of simultaneous projects in an evolving, dynamic, collaborative environment.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience working in library collection development or with selection of materials in vendor provided electronic acquisitions systems.
  • Experience working with Innovative Interfaces, Inc. integrated library systems.
  • Fluently speaks one language other than English, preferably Spanish.

This is a 40-hour per week, non-exempt role.
