Description:

The Five College Libraries operate as a shared ecosystem, collectively providing approximately ten million items (and counting) to the faculty, students, staff, and local communities of Amherst, Mount Holyoke, Smith, and Hampshire Colleges and the University of Massachusetts Amherst. Circulating print materials at each individual library are requestable across the Five Colleges and deliveries are made to each campus once a day or more. The Five College Libraries operate two off-site collections storage facilities: the Library Annex in North Hatfield and the Depository in Amherst.

The Five College Library Repository Collection includes about 820,000 items, consisting primarily of print materials with intellectual and research value. These lesser used and infrequently circulating periodicals, serials, and books are drawn from the Five College libraries and affiliate members.

Job Summary:

During a six month to one year project the Repository Collection Metadata Analyst will evaluate and remediate metadata for the Five College Repository Collection, with an emphasis on identifying metadata errors and determining the scope and scale of metadata needs. The Repository Collection Metadata Analyst will initiate work on the backlog of currently identified metadata clean-up projects and establish a plan for ongoing metadata maintenance.

Utilizing project management techniques, such as requirements gathering and creating a communication plan, the Repository Collection Metadata Analyst will consult with stakeholders across the Five Colleges to assess and document repository metadata needs. With the goal of establishing an enduring metadata maintenance program, the Repository Collection Metadata Analyst will recommend the institutional resources needed to maintain complete and accurate metadata for materials in the Repository Collection, ensuring those materials are discoverable and accurately described to users within and beyond the Five Colleges.

The Repository Collection Metadata Analyst will work closely with the Five College Metadata Management Committee to ensure that the Repository Collection metadata is in alignment with Five College bibliographic and record management agreements. This includes updating existing records in our library services platform, FOLIO, and in external systems such as OCLC WorldCat and RapidILL. The Repository Collection Metadata Analyst will document workflows as well as estimate the staff time needed for ongoing completion of these workflows as part of their recommendation for ongoing metadata maintenance.

The Repository Collection Metadata Analyst is a remote-work position, but the final candidate may be required to attend an onsite orientation at the Five Colleges Depository in Amherst, MA.
