Houston Public Library (HPL) is seeking an experienced, team-oriented person with a passion for customer service to work as a Librarian II (Supervisor) at the Central Library. The current position is as the assistant manager for Reference Services. The Central Library serves as a hub for reference services for the system and provides assistance to entrepreneurial customers seeking assistance starting their own businesses. Selected candidates will help lead and train staff in reference services and circulation practices and should communicate effectively, provide exceptional customer service, and enjoy interacting with people of all ages from diverse backgrounds.
The Librarian II Supervisor duties will include:
- Providing and modeling exceptional public service and making the library a welcoming space for all though day to day operations.
- Leading and supervising assigned staff including providing timely and objective feedback of performance and fostering the learning and development of staff.
- Overseeing creative and innovative reference services for all ages including electronic, telephone, email, mail and appointment-based reference and research services.
- Taking initiative to creatively solve problems and possessing sound decision-making skills.
- Interacting with customers at the customer service desk to find information and library materials.
- Creating, developing, and delivering reference trainings to staff and customers.
- Creating and developing online content for library’s website and/or intranet.
- Serving as the person in charge.
- Requires evenings and weekends (Saturday and Sundays) 8am-8:15pm shift work on a rotating basis.
- Other duties as assigned.
