Job Description

Position Summary:

The Research & Instruction Librarian is a full-time, permanent, exempt staff appointment reporting to the Library Director. The position is responsible for oversight of research and reference services and library information literacy instruction.

Essential Functions & Responsibilities

Reference Services

  • Manages Library reference and research services, including research and information desk activities, email reference, and chat service
  • Provides policies and procedures for reference services and implementation of new services and technologies
  • Supervises (hires, trains, schedules, oversees, and evaluates) Peer Research Coach student employees
  • Administers reference software (such as LibGuides and Gimlet) including providing standardized templates and training users on best practices
  • Orients and trains new reference providers, conducts and facilitates regular reference training for all providers
  • Assesses the research services program and provides feedback based on best practices
  • Serves as library contact for consortium chat reference service

Instruction Program & Information Literacy Oversight 

  • Manages the Library’s instructional program
  • In collaboration with administration and colleagues, develops, documents, implements, and assesses information literacy initiatives
  • Based on national standards for information literacy and specific FLC curricula, manages a comprehensive bibliographic instruction program for the College composition classes and performs library instruction for these courses
  • Produces informational and instructional materials to facilitate Library users in successfully using resources
  • Remains current with changing information-delivery systems and recommends the implementation of new technologies to enhance Library instruction
  • Maintains statistics on Library instruction and creates reports as needed
  • Provides or coordinates training sessions for new and existing librarians

Other Responsibilities 

  • Serves as library liaison to assigned academic departments
  • Teaches classes about library use and research techniques
  • Performs collection development
  • Works collegially with instructors to create course assignments that relate to library resources and information literacy goals
  • Provides reference service in person and by phone, email, and chat
  • Participates in and/or leads Library governance teams, campus committees, and consortium committees as assigned
  • Demonstrates a commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and student success, as well as working with broadly diverse communities
  • Performs other duties as assigned

Benefits & Additional Compensation Info

Compensation

The salary range is $51,000 to $56,500, plus a comprehensive benefits package

Additional Info & Requirements

Required Education, Specialized Skills and Experience:

   ALA accredited master's degree in library or information science, received by September 2024
   Any combination of experience and coursework in the fundamentals of information literacy, instruction, online learning and instructional technology
   Experience using learning management systems 
   Demonstrated organizational, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills 
   Proven ability to work both independently and collaboratively 
   Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communications skills  
   A demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and student success, as well as working with broadly diverse communities

Preferred Education, Specialized Skills and Experience:

   Experience providing research services in an academic environment  
   Experience providing information literacy instruction
   Supervisory experience
