Job Description

Responsibilities and Duties:

  • Oversees collection development for adult fiction and non-fiction books and media (print and digital), including collection development for the Bookmobile.
  • Coordinates Library-wide Readers’ Advisory efforts.
  • Plans, promotes and executes programs, events, and services centered on books, reading and authors to include planning engaging Summer Reading programs for adults and coordinating the Library’s ReadNext service.
  • Participates in the Library’s Communication and Marketing team and contributes to the development of social media content and marketing materials.
  • Manages the Library’s engagement calendar and contributes to the management of Springshare products, including the Library website.
  • Designs Library exhibits and displays. Develops compelling stories to highlight the value of the Library using data and data visualization tools and techniques.
  • Provides patron’s advisory/reference service, including interviewing, searching and finding appropriate materials and offering alternative sources.
  • Supervises and directs work of Library volunteers. May have supervisory responsibility for other Library staff in the absence of the department head.
  • Contributes to coverage of the Information Desk; assists patrons in the use of online catalog, databases, the Internet, Library apps, such as OverDrive and Hoopla, Kindles and other personal devices.
  • Directs or assists with basic Circulation Services, including charging/discharging materials, shelving materials, registering new patrons, trouble shooting computers, printers, and other equipment. Conducts patron instruction one-on-one and in groups.
  • Attends Minuteman Library Network, regional and state-wide meetings and workshops; participates in committees that develop or enhance Library programs and technologies.
  • Ensures a positive Library experience for patrons by providing service in a courteous, knowledgeable and effective manner.

Additional Info & Requirements

Master’s in Library Science from an A.L.A. accredited institution. A minimum 2-3 years of experience in a related field, such as bookselling, publishing, customer service or retail. Thorough knowledge of automated library systems, word processing, online databases and related applications. Extensive knowledge of books and current trends in literature and publishing are essential. Knowledge of social media platforms and graphic design tools, and familiarity with current trends in and strategies for communicating the Library’s value to the public. Strong customer service and public speaking skills. Ability to relate to all age groups.

The ideal candidate will ensure WPL has a relevant, robust and diverse platform of Readers’ Services through collection development and programming for community members of all ages. The Readers’ Services Librarian will foster and encourage a lifelong love of reading and ensure a positive Library experience for patrons. The position works under the general direction of the Assistant Library Director.
