Job Summary: The Adult Services Librarian plans and implements adult programming and outreach services to the community, under the direction of the Head of Adult Services and Outreach, and in conjunction with other staff. Provides assistance to the public for their information needs, including the usage of digital and electronic services. Assists in collection maintenance and selection of the adult collections. Significant interaction with the public. Represents the library in the community.
Accountability: Reports to the Head of Adult Services and Outreach or other senior staff. There is a six-month trial period and performance reviews are scheduled annually.
Supervisory Responsibility: None
Equipment Used: To include but not limited to computer terminals/keyboards, video equipment, sound equipment, computers and peripherals, barcode reader, photocopiers, calculators, and small hand tools; electronic smart devices, tablets, and readers.
Environment: Most tasks and duties are performed within the Library building; attendance at meetings of local organizations and professional meetings outside the Library as staffing permits. Programs and events may also take place outside the Library building, either at other building locations or outdoors.
Normal hours of duty: As scheduled, including evenings and Saturdays. (Subject to change)
Duties and Responsibilities
The following functions are considered essential for this position:
• Assist in the planning of outreach programming, events and services including facilitation of book discussions, connecting Goffstown Public Library with the community.
• Plan and implement adult programming in coordination with Head of Adult Services and Outreach and other staff members. Assist in creation of promotional materials and design of media campaigns including but not limited to web and social media content, flyers, brochures, pamphlets, etc.
• Maintain library event calendar for all departments, including events, meetings, and closures.
• Coordinate with GTV and library staff on monthly recordings. Provide promotional materials to GTV for marketing campaigns.
• Provide reader’s advisory and reference services to the public, via email, in person, through online live chat and over the telephone.
• Prepare monthly statistics and forward to Head of Adult Services and Outreach.
• Develop and maintain displays, bulletin boards, and reading lists.
• Participate in collection development and materials selection as assigned.
• Use current technologies in support of information services, including but not limited to database searching and the Internet. May instruct other staff members in the proper use of such resources.
• Assist visitors in locating appropriate materials and using public access terminals for the public catalog, Internet, subscription databases, including instruction to the public.
• Attend professional meetings and conferences at the discretion of Head of Adult Services and Outreach.
• Provide coverage in other areas of the library as needed.
• Communicate frequently with the Head of Adult Services and Outreach on topics relating to adult services.
• Actively participate in the GMILCS groups including attending meetings. Provide regular reports to Library Director and other staff.
• Perform other related duties as assigned.

M.L.S. or equivalent graduate degree from an institution accredited by the American Library Association or any combination of education and experience which demonstrates possession of the required knowledge, skills and abilities determined by Library Director. Public library experience preferred. Good communication skills, computer literacy and knowledge of reference tools and searching techniques are necessary. Excellent organizational and time management skills required.
Job requires some lifting, frequent walking and stair climbing, along with the ability to climb on stools and ladders to retrieve materials on high shelves. Ability to listen, understand, and interpret visitor and staff requests and questions critically. Self-motivation, a professional attitude, and a sense of commitment are necessary. Ability to work with the public, flexible attitude about tasks and faculty with learning new skills a must. Excellent customer service skills required. Ability to work cooperatively and patiently with staff and library users and possess good verbal and written communication skills. Computer literacy expected. Enthusiasm for reading is a definite plus. Appropriate attire and a courteous manner are expected.
Goffstown Public Library serves a community of 18,600. Goffstown is in Hillsborough County and located west of the city of Manchester. Goffstown Public Library is part of the GMILCS consortium. Goffstown Public Library was built in 1909 and added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1995.
Mission: The Goffstown Public Library will serve as a primary resource for community information needs. It will provide a comfortable place for citizens to access quality materials and programs, enhance cultural awareness and to explore issues of local, national and global interest.
