Job Description

The Access Services Librarian is a ranked faculty department head position that will focus on user experience, enhancing access to collections, and managing library spaces for academic and community activities. This role is essential for fostering an environment that strengthens a sense of belonging among students and community members. The position manages initiatives related to Interlibrary Loan (ILL), access to collections, customer service, and library stack and space management to support the library as a pivotal resource for campus and community activities that advance the university’s mission as well as our Hispanic Serving Institution status and strategic commitment to be a "people for and with others."

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

Education:

  • Master of Library Science (MLS/MLIS) from an ALA-accredited institution.

Required Experience:

Working knowledge of resource-sharing systems, such as ILLiad, Sierra, etc.

Evidence of copyright management.

Proven record of proactively identifying opportunities for improvement and independently implementing innovative solutions that have positively impacted their previous workplaces.

Knowledge of principles and processes for providing customer service.

Minimum two years of experience with Access Services functions.

Minimum of two years of supervisory experience. 

Preferred Experience:

Bilingual in Spanish and English.

Demonstrated ability to create and maintain an atmosphere of inclusion and belonging that celebrates diverse backgrounds, beliefs, and perspectives.

Demonstrated experience managing library space.

Three years of full-time librarianship in a regionally accredited college or university (or its equivalent) is required for appointment to Assistant Professor rank.

Two years of professional library experience.

Working knowledge of resource-sharing systems, such as ILLiad, Sierra, etc.

Evidence of copyright management.

Proven record of proactively identifying opportunities for improvement and independently implementing innovative solutions that have positively impacted their previous workplaces.

Minimum of two years of supervisory experience. 

Professional Development and University Service: Engage in professional activities including research, presentations, and publications to meet academic rank and promotion requirements. May serve as a bibliographer and faculty liaison, potentially participating in the library instruction program. Participate in library and university-wide committees, supporting the values and mission of the institution.

Copyright and Research Support: In collaboration with ILL Specialist, provide copyright management, compliance, and education to campus community. Collaborate with colleagues to provide research assistance.

Reporting and Compliance: Maintain records on maintenance issues, usage statistics, and service performance. Ensure operations in Access Services adhere to institutional policies and best practices.

Space Management: Manage library spaces to optimize their use as welcoming areas for study, interaction, and community events. Monitor and manage building maintenance requests and work with the Dean’s office to propose space improvements to improve functionality and aesthetics, supporting an environment conducive to learning and collaboration.

Event Calendar Coordination: In coordination with library faculty and staff, utilize LibCal to schedule academic department and community organization-sponsored programs and events in the Dayton Memorial Library that contribute to campus and community engagement experiences.

Access and Resource Management: Oversee the effective management of staff for circulation, course reserves, interlibrary services, and stack maintenance to maximize access to library resources. Oversight of resource-sharing systems, including ILLiad and Sierra. In coordination with other members of the department, manage upgrades, edit webpages, troubleshoot system issues, and ensure availability and easy access of services to library users. Manage the physical layout and condition of collections.

Leadership and Management: Provide innovative and collaborative leadership of a department with 5 direct reports and over 20 student employees. Share responsibility with the Dean of the Library and other department heads in providing a vision for moving the library forward to best serve the socio-academic needs of our diverse student base.
