Title: LIBRARY SPECIALIST DETENTION CENTER LIBRARY (30-hours)
Location: Arapahoe County Detention Center Library, 7375 S. Potomac St. Centennial, CO 80112
Reports to: Supervisor, Detention Center
FLSA Status: Non - Exempt, Part-time
Pay Rate: $18.50 - 21.70
Purpose: Provides information services to the inmate patrons and staff of the Arapahoe County Detention facility by delivering outstanding and personalized service in all areas.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
75% INMATE PATRON ASSISTANCE AND MATERIAL PROCESSING
- Monitors and responds to inmate patron electronic information requests
- Motivates and coaches inmate workers to assist library staff in providing services
- Provides personalized advisory services to inmate patrons
- Helps inmate patrons with general reference, intermediate legal and re-entry assistance
- Develops and revises information and re-entry packets
- Processes and shelves materials and patron holds
- Researches and recommends materials for collection development
- Processes books by entering basic information into the catalogue
- Assists in maintaining an attractive, current and useful collection
- Resolves circulation concerns by monitoring reports
15% LEARNING AND DEVELOPMENT
- Keeps current on new library resources, trends, technology and offerings
- Takes initiative to consistently update skills to effectively assist patrons
- Keeps up to date on internal communication and information to effectively assist patrons and co-workers
- Promotes positive relationships with co-workers and collaborates with others to meet the needs of staff and patrons
- Provides ongoing and regular feedback and observations to supervisor
10% TECHNOLOGY ASSISTANCE
- Responds to inmate patron requests by providing basic legal research and instruction on how to search Lexis Nexis for legal information
Performs other related duties as assigned and requested
Minimum Qualifications:
- Ability to work in a high security environment.
- Ability to successfully pass a criminal background check.
- Ability to work with varying demographics, including individuals who are charged with or convicted of violent crimes.
- Intermediate technology skills, such as file management, file sharing, word processing, internet and website navigation, etc.
- Ability to act as a liaison between Arapahoe Libraries and Arapahoe County Sheriff's Office.
- Ability to wear District supplied uniform shirt.
- Demonstrate enthusiasm for an environment of constant change.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Two years customer service working with incarcerated or at-risk populations
- Bachelor's degree
- Intermediate research skills and/or coursework in library science
- Experience with legal research
Work Environment:
- The essential duties for this position are performed in a high security, indoor, confined and windowless environment.
- Moderate noise (computers, phones, printers and patron interactions).
- Must follow safety and security policies from Arapahoe County Sheriff's Office.
- Environment is occasionally emotionally and psychologically stressful.
Physical Activities:
Physical activities required to perform essential duties include:
- Must be able to remain in a stationary position 25-50%of the time.
- Must be able to move around 75-100% of the time.
- Ability to lift to 40 lbs.
- Ability to carry up to 40 lbs.
- Ability to push and pull a cart weighing up to 100 lbs.
- Ability to kneel, crouch, reach and stoop 50% of the time.
- Use of hands, fingers, and grasping of books is required, with repetitive motion.
- Long periods of sitting, remaining stationary, or moving around.
- Frequency or repetitive actions which includes typing and shelving materials.
- Bending, grasping, stretching without limitations which includes reaching into bins for materials, moving bins and carts filled with materials, shelving and shifting materials at various height levels.
- Lifting above your waist, head, and shoulders up to 25 lbs.
