Job Description

BiblioTemps® is an employment service of the Massachusetts Library System that provides experienced library workers for temporary placements in public, academic, and special libraries throughout Massachusetts.

Title:                Science & Engineering Librarian

Location:         Science & Engineering Library, UMass Amherst (Amherst, MA)

Position Type: Temporary

Start date:       January 6, 2025

End date:         December 6, 2025

Schedule:         Monday-Friday 9am-5pm

Pay Rate:        $20.75-$24.00 per hour, based on experience

CORI:               Not required

Description:

This full-time position (37.5 hours per week) will provide general and advanced reference and research assistance for undergraduates, graduates and faculty in the College of Natural Sciences and the Manning College of Information and Computer Sciences and support activities in the Science and Engineering Library. 

Supervision received:

  • This position reports to the Head of the Science and Engineering Library.

Supervision exercised:

  • None

Responsibilities:

  • Serve as the Libraries primary contact for selected academic departments in the sciences.
  • Provide general and in-depth research consultations in assigned specialization areas and respond to general queries.
  • Provide information literacy instruction as needed.
  • Communicate regularly with faculty, staff, students, and administrators to maintain strong and productive working relationships.
  • Collaborate with other subject specialists to provide coverage of interdisciplinary areas outside traditional subject boundaries.
  • Purchase materials in support of faculty and graduate student requests.
  • Contribute to departmental projects and initiatives as needed.

Qualifications:    

  • Recent experience providing reference, instruction and/or liaison support and services in an academic library, research library, or similar research environment.
  • Knowledge of reference and information sources in all formats.
  • Facility with technology and its application in academic contexts.
  • Strong service orientation and the ability to meet the public graciously and tactfully.
  • Ability to establish and maintain harmonious working relationships with others.
  • Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
  • Excellent organizational and interpersonal skills.
  • Educational background in life sciences, public health, or nursing preferred.
  • Knowledge of reference and information sources relating to science and agriculture preferred.

Minimum Entrance Requirements:

  • Master’s degree in library science or equivalent degree from a program accredited by the American Library Association, or its equivalent in librarianship from another country, or pursuing a master’s degree in librarianship, or have appropriate equivalent experience.
  • Experience providing research support.
  • Excellent interpersonal and organizational skills.
