The Community

Jemez Springs is a small village along the beautiful Jemez Mountain Trail National Scenic Byway, with a population of about 200. Surrounding unincorporated areas house another several thousand people, whom the library serves. Nearby Jemez Pueblo is the largest community in the corridor and also has a public library. Otherwise, the closest public libraries are in Rio Rancho and Los Alamos. You can learn more about the demographics and communities from the data collected via the ALA-LTC Grant here: https://jsplibrary.org/community-conversations/. The land on which the library and Village reside was originally inhabited by the ancestors of the Pueblo of Jemez, who now reside at Walatowa due to forced removal in the late 1600’s. There is a strong community interest in local history.

Visitors from near and far frequent the area Spring-Fall both as a tourist destination, and as a stop on the way to outdoor recreation at nearby hot springs, state parks, national forest, and the Valles Caldera National Preserve. JSPL often serves as a visitor information center with free Wi-Fi, restrooms, and information.

Communities in the Jemez Valley and Mountains are at the heart of the Jemez Springs Public Library (JSPL). It is a welcoming community where folks generally look out for one another. The library is well appreciated for the many events/programs, the collection (including a Library of Things and a Seed Library), digital access, community partnerships, and the breadth of assistance available from the library staff. There is no theater, internet café, copy center, discount store, or hardware store in Jemez Springs; the library fills many gaps. JSPL is well supported by the Village of Jemez Springs and by volunteers, including a fantastic Library Board and Friends of the Library (FOL) group.

Local housing is limited as most people do not want to leave this beautiful area once they are here. There are a few small stores along the corridor and a Farmer’s Market in summer through early fall; currently for the bulk of shopping locals drive to either Los Alamos or Rio Rancho/Bernalillo. The public bus has a commute-related schedule; the northern terminal is the library parking lot.

Salary for this position is competitive for a rural New Mexico rural library.
