Job Description

                                                                                                   Collections Student Assistant

                                                                                                            Student Assistant VI 

Overview

The Collections Student Assistant will engage in activities related to collection development and management as well as other opportunities related to the day-to-day operations of a large academic library. This position could also be a paid internship, if coordinated with the student’s internship office. Every employee of the library is expected to treat others, and in return be treated, with respect and dignity.

Reports To

•                  Mariana (Mari) Prestigiacomo - Collection Development Librarian (Collection Development and Strategies Department)

Job Duties

•                  Write content for online news items and highlights to promote collections.

•                  Assist with the assessment of collections.

•                  Process donations.

•                  Withdraw or transfer material from collections.

•                  Cover library desk and chat shifts.

•                  May assist with any special projects for the library in general as needed.

Example of past projects:

o   Researching scholarly publications from the three associated institutions

o   Recommending eBooks and books in subject areas of interest

o   Researching discipline-specific publication themes and practices

o   Updating documentation of database vendors’ corporate practices

Minimum Qualifications (Please do not apply if you do not meet the following)

•        Enrolled in at least one credit hour in an ALA accredited graduate program in Library and Information Science.

•        Ability to work well independently as well as part of a team.

•        Must apply for a work-study award once offered and accepted position.

o   Work-Study Students: Undergraduate work-study students MUST be enrolled for at least 6 credit hours throughout a semester, including summer semesters.

o   Graduate work-study students: MUST be enrolled in at least 3 credit hours throughout a semester, including summer semesters (except in the case of students completing their thesis and/or dissertation credit during a single summer semester).

•        Students may still be eligible for hire if they are not awarded a work study award if the department’s budget permits.

Preferred Qualifications

•                  Interest in academic librarianship, especially collection development and management.

•                  Attention to detail and accuracy.

•                  Organizational and analytical skills.

•                  Ability to perform without direct supervision except for infrequent occasions involving the most complex situations.

•                  Work Study eligible.

Schedule: 10-15 hours per week. Hours are flexible Monday-Friday, 8:00am - 5:00pm.

Compensation: $22.00/hr.
