
Responsibilities: Under the direct supervision of the Coordinator of Youth Services as well as the general supervision of library administration, this employee carries out library services for Young Adults in the community within the framework of the library’s approved program of service.
- Provides direct public service at the Youth Services desk.
- Plans, organizes, and conducts staff-led programs for middle-schoolers and high-schoolers.
- Plans, organizes, and conducts the library’s Summer Reading Program for Young Adults (6th grade & up.)
- Selects material for the library collections and evaluates the collections for timeliness and use, with particular emphasis on the Young Adult collection.
- Provides outreach to the community by establishing and maintaining contacts with local schools and other community organizations through visiting other sites and hosting library visits.
- Teaches children, young adults, and their parents how to use the library and its resources.
- Classifies, catalogs, and enters materials into the OSL database.
- Promotes library services, collections, and programs through publications in print and electronic form.
- Participates in providing public service at all of the library’s service desks, when needed.
- Participates actively in the profession by keeping abreast of new ideas and trends in library service and by attending meetings and workshops at the request of the Youth Services Coordinator.
- Supervises the operation of Youth Services in the absence of the Coordinator.
Qualifications: Master’s Degree in Library and Information Science from an American Library Association-accredited program. Experience in a public library setting working with Young Adults as well as a demonstrated knowledge of library practices including knowledge of reader interest levels and of books, authors, and culture in general; library technology, reference materials and resources in print and electronic format, and standard office computer applications; ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with colleagues, library patrons of all ages, and community groups; good oral and written communication skills and the ability to develop and present programs Young Adults.
