SUMMARY: The media specialist plans, develops, and administers the library media program to accomplish the goals and objectives of the district within established guidelines and procedures. The media specialist partners with teaching staff in the development of student literacy through the administration of the library/media center programs; to provide specialized instruction to faculty and students; and to oversee the selection, organization, utilization, and maintenance of school library/media resources.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
- Develops, in consultation with the building principal, staff, and Director of Media Services, a plan and priorities for media center services and operations
- Administers that annual budget for building media materials and services based on district and building goals, coordinates requisitions for such media materials, equipment and services and maintains an accurate record of expenditures
- Inventories and maintains the building collection of materials and equipment in good condition
- Coordinates procedures for selection/deselection of media materials according to district guidelines; and provides for arranging and circulation of these materials and equipment for effective utilization in the instructional program
- Plans the school media center program including a curriculum-oriented instructional program, use of resources by students and staff, arrangement of resources, and evaluation of the program
- Works cooperatively with teachers in the design and preparations of units of study
- Promotes student and staff reading for information and pleasure; maintains a library culture that encourages appreciation of literature
- Reinforces strategy-based reading instruction to help students make meaning from text; supports students’ interaction with a variety of genre as reflected in district reading and writing curriculum
- Cooperates in the facilitation of student learning activities which may be done in the classroom as well as in the media center to meet a variety of student needs, interests, and abilities
- Assists students in selection of materials and equipment and advises teachers about new and existing materials and techniques
- Provides reference assistance and instructions to students and staff
- Provides an effective use of space and furnishings in the media center to create a positive and inviting atmosphere conducive to learning
- Provides in-service as needed in use of media equipment for faculty and students, as well as production and development of media materials
- Participates in continuing education programs for professional growth including in-service courses and meetings as required

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITY:
- Human relations skills
- Knowledgeable about technology to the library media program and services including telecommunication systems and services; computer systems and services; basic and advanced forms of media production and use; administration of hardware and software systems and faculty design for proper media use
- Ability to use district standard software/hardware and emerging technologies related to the delivery of library services
- Ability to use automated library systems and district procedures for collection, development, and maintenance, purchasing/processing, cataloging, and inventory
SUPERVISION/TECHNICAL RESPONSIBILITY:
- Supervise the daily activities of students in employee’s care.
EDUCATION AND TRAINING:
- Bachelor’s degree in library science or related field required.
EXPERIENCE:
- Experience working with students in media center or library setting.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, & REGISTRATIONS:
- Colorado teaching license with appropriate endorsement (or licensure application in process with CDE).

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel and talk or hear. The employee is occasionally required to stand; walk; and reach with hands and arms. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 10 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
