Position Summary

Under the general supervision of the Collection Development Manager, the Selection Librarian performs a variety of professional library services pertaining to the selection, development and maintenance of the JCLS materials collections, both physical and digital. Serves as system-wide specialist in a particular area (i.e. adult or children’s/teen audience, digital collections and databases), in a variety of formats. Carries out administrative functions such as planning, budget forecasting, system-wide coordination, vendor communication, and the development of standards, guidelines, and procedures. Cultivates meaningful, inclusive collections that stimulate reading, discovery, awareness, and curiosity to meet the diverse needs of Jackson County residents.


 

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Selects, develops, and maintains a collection of digital materials for the district.
  • Assesses digital collection usage, identifies and fills gaps in the digital collection, and manages the de-selection of digital materials.
  • Assists with digital collection, database, and eLearning platform evaluation, selection, maintenance, deselection, and troubleshooting.
  • Performs duties in accordance with the Collection Development Policy.
  • Serves as liaison between department and branch libraries, soliciting input and feedback on the collection, resolving procedural or operational questions, and informing staff of new resources, updates, and issues.
  • Provides excellent customer service in responding to patron inquiries and patron purchase suggestions
  • Keeps up-to-date with trends and best practices in library collections, the book industry, and popular culture as it relates to the diverse Jackson County communities.
  • Ensures applicable policies are current including the CD policy.
  • Participates in budget process for department. In assigned area of specialization, helps plan, forecast, and monitor budget.
  • Develops trainings and workshops for staff in area of specialization.
  • Leads committees and task forces in area of specialization.
  • Prepares statistical and other reports and analyses.
  • Supports branch and systemwide programs, and strategic goals, and initiatives.
  • Understands the American Library Association’s Library Bill of Rights, Freedom to Read Statement and Freedom to View Statement, recognizing that freedom of access is a fundamental tenet of a public library.
  • Follows all legal and policy requirements related to patron privacy and custodianship of patron records.??
  • Regular attendance.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Compensation

JCLS has a 16-step salary schedule with each step at 1.5%. The starting salary will be based on steps 1-5 on Grade N of the schedule. New hires are placed based on applicable education and experience to the job, as well as keeping within Oregon state pay equity laws. The starting range for this position is $28.31 to $30.08 per hour or $58,888 to $62,558 per year. This range includes a 3% cost of living adjustment effective July 1, 2025, pending Board approval. Staff members who pass a Spanish language competency test are eligible for a Bilingual Stipend per JCLS policy.

Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  1. Master’s degree in Library and Information Science from an ALA accredited institution, OR equivalent combination of education and experience that provides the knowledge, skills, and abilities required to perform the duties as described.
  2. One year of library materials selection experience.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  1. Bilingual in Spanish.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS/LICENSES

  • Criminal background check required.
  • Must be able to travel to other locations to perform work, and/or attend work-related meetings, workshops or conferences.

$58,888 to $73,756 per year
