Under the supervision of the Head of Reference Services, this position provides reference and readers’ advisory services, technology help, and programming support primarily at the Weaver Library. This public service oriented individual provides these services mainly at the Reference Desk, but also in the Children’s Room, and as needed at branch locations. The regular weekly schedule includes two evenings a week and alternating Saturdays and may be adjusted occasionally to cover staff shortages or special programs.
Responsibilities:
- Provides exemplary customer service to adults, teens, children, and families, and is committed to providing outstanding service to marginalized communities
- Provides digital literacy instruction and assistance to learners of all experience levels
- Assists patrons in the use of library resources, including databases and eZone
- Answers reference and readers’ advisory questions in person and over the telephone
- Guides patrons in the use of the public access computers and various types of office equipment such as the copier, fax, scanner, and printer
- Provides technology assistance to patrons and troubleshoots eZone and other inquiries on patrons’ devices
- Promotes library programs, services, and collections; creates displays, content for social media, and themed book lists
- Maintains the appearance of the library by straightening areas and filling displays as needed
- Fosters a welcoming environment in the library
- Assists with ILL, homebound library services
- Performs other duties as assigned
Minimum Qualifications:
- American Library Association accredited Master’s Degree in Library Science or active matriculation in an accredited Masters of Library Science program (expected graduation date of June 2027 or sooner)
- Work experience in a public library or course work in public librarianship
Desirable abilities, knowledge and skills:
- Knowledge of current technological applications for information access. Ability to utilize web-based and subscription databases. Ability to troubleshoot computers, printers, e-readers, and other technological devices. Knowledge of e-books, e-readers, Microsoft Office and Google applications.
- Experience with the Ocean State Libraries system and Aspen catalog
- Experience with the Koha ILS
- Ability to travel to required locations in a timely manner
- Multilingual
