Job Description

The Adult Services Librarian will perform a variety of professional library functions, educating and informing the public on library use and services, reference assistance, reader’s advisory, programming, community activities, collection development and periodically assists with cataloging services. 

 

Job Description/ Essential Duties:

These job functions are the essential duties of the position and are not all-inclusive of all the duties the incumbent may be assigned.

 

Reference Duties:

  • Provides reference, reader’s advisory and technology assistance to patrons of all ages, with a focus on adults.  
  • Performs circulation desk duties a portion of each shift.

 

Programming Duties:

  • Plans and facilitates adult programming and community outreach.
  • Develops and initiates new partnerships to increase the impact of Library services to the community.  
  • Creates print and digital marketing materials; contributes to the library website, local newspaper articles, newsletter, community calendars and other promotional outlets and opportunities in conjunction with other library staff.
  • Writes and administers grants for collection and program development, primarily for the adult services department. Manages grant budgets and creates final reports.
  • Consistently utilizes current social media platforms, coordinating and creating social media schedules and campaigns to connect with and recruit current and new audiences.

 

Collection Development Duties:

  • Selects and orders materials in physical and digital formats in areas of specialization to meet community demand.
  • Analyzes, evaluates and identifies materials for removal or replacements while adhering to collection development policy and procedures.
  • Enhances underutilized collections dependent on underserved demographics.

 

Other Duties:

  • Performs circulation duties. 
  • Provides exemplary customer service by demonstrating a willingness to be attentive, understanding, responsive, courteous and respectful.
  • Prepares various materials and documents including reports, brochures and manuals.
  • Participates in the acquisition of library materials; requisitioning supplies and materials; maintaining related files; monitoring expenditures.
  • Represents the library in city and county-wide coalitions as assigned.
  • Reconciles MSC reports.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the Director of Library Services.
  • Updates library signage as needed.

Essential Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Related to this Position:

The successful candidate will possess: 

  • Experience with downloadable books, e-readers, tablets, and smartphones.
  • Knowledge of library practices and a willingness to stay abreast of changes and library trends.
  • Experience with HTML, CSS, Adobe Creative Suite, social media, Canva, and website building.
  • Strong instruction skills and ability to work with people representing a wide range of technical knowledge and abilities.
  • Ability to understand reading materials and verbal instructions that require complex interpretation.
  • Ability to perform mathematical calculations ranging from simple to sometimes complex.
  • Strong computer skills including Microsoft Office Suite (Excel and Word) and the ability to learn and utilize various software and databases.
  • Ability to write and present clear and concise administrative reports.
  • Ability to interpret and apply Federal, State, and local policies, procedures, laws, and regulations as they relate to the position.
  • Ability to exercise good judgment, flexibility, creativity, and sensitivity in response to changing situations and needs.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to establish, maintain, and foster positive and harmonious working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.

Additional Info & Requirements

Minimum Required Qualifications (Education, Experience and Training)

  • Bachelor’s degree; and 
  • At least two years of relevant library work experience; or
  • Any equivalent combination of knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to perform the work may be considered.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in library science (MLS) is preferred.
  • Cataloging experience.
  • Experience with SirsiDynix, OCLC, OverDrive, Libby, and EBSCO databases.

 

Special Requirements/Licenses or Certificates:

  • Enrollment in Montana State Library certification program upon hire.
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license and have the ability to obtain a Montana driver’s license within 60 days of employment.
  • Offers of employment are conditional upon satisfactory completion of a pre-employment background check, reference checks, and driving record check.

 

Tools and Equipment Used:

  • Operates modern office machines and equipment, including personal computers, printers, copiers, scanners, telephone system and calculators.  Must be able to routinely use a full range of software applications, including word processing, spreadsheets, and a variety of standard or customized software applications appropriate to assigned tasks.

 

Working Conditions and Physical Requirements:

The physical requirements described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.

  • Duties are performed in an office-type environment. 
  • The noise level ranges from quiet to moderate.
  • Requires regular and punctual attendance and reports to work fit for duty.
  • Duties require extended periods of sitting, walking, standing, talking, or hearing, keyboarding, reaching with hands and arms, and manual dexterity to handle office related machines and tools. 
  • Duties require occasional climbing or balancing, lifting/carrying items, pulling/pushing items, and stooping, kneeling, crouching, or crawling. 
  • Hazards are minor and controllable but can include cramped quarters, human error, angry/hostile humans, or exposure to a variety of outdoor weather conditions.
  • Ability to perform body movements applicable to records management in an office environment.
  • Possession of hand/eye coordination adequate to operate a computer and calculator.
  • Have the ability to talk and hear in person and by telephone; see and read instructions, spreadsheets, reference materials, and computer reports.
  • Ability to lift 10 pounds on a routine basis and up to 50 pounds on an infrequent basis.
  • Must be able to push and pull book racks with casters. 
  • Hours may be irregular, including evenings and weekends.
