Full-Time Head of Circulation/IT Technician

HEAD OF CIRCULATION/INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY TECHNICIAN
SUMMARY
The Head of Circulation/Information Technology Technician reports to the Library Director. Circulation Clerks report to the Head of Circulation. Duties include performing all circulation functions, and training, scheduling and supervising Circulation staff. This position also provides a reliable, accurate responsive, efficient, safe and secure information systems platform for library service delivery. He/she responds to staff calls for help, troubleshoots and solves hardware and software problems, monitors overall system performance and implements improvements. A high school diploma, computer skills, and a great patron service attitude are required; library experience and familiarity with Windows 11, peripherals, and Koha and Aspen are preferred.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Administrative Duties
- Oversee the staffing and functioning of the Circulation Desk
- Checks Circulation Department email daily for Patron Point items and general correspondence.
- Reviews damaged materials and notifies previous patron and owning libraries, if applicable, as necessary
- Reviews and follows up on damaged/missing material correspondence as necessary
- Reviews Transits to Receive list daily for late items and checks shelves if required. Notifies sending libraries if items are not at East Greenwich Library and are very late.
- Provide information regarding the Circulation Department to the Director as needed
- Work with other department heads to assure library goals are met
- Assure personnel are trained and able to perform their duties
- Patron/Public Services
- Greet and assist library patrons, using effective customer service skills
- Perform all circulation functions, assisting library patrons with library services including technology services, and other duties as required
- Perform all Circulation Desk functions, including:
- Check ins, check outs, and renewals of library materials
- Informing patrons of the status of their library record
- Processing applications for and issuing new library cards
- Answering telephone calls and conducting transfers as necessary
- Sorting and shelving all library material in correct order
- Clearing expired and canceled holds using Koha functions
- Shelf reading, shifting, edging, and straightening materials as part of routine shelf maintenance.
- Maintaining order of periodical collection
- Locating and processing materials on hold lists
- Preparing materials for, and unpacking delivery
- Assisting in the emptying of the book drops
- Identifying books requiring mending, noting the book's particular problem
- Answering directional questions and referring patrons to other staff for reference queries.
- Assisting patrons in copying, printing, and other technology tasks
- Referring requests for new acquisitions and interlibrary loans to reference, youth or adult fiction collection development staff
- Information Technology Duties
- Maintain, update, and upgrade library computers, peripherals, and software
- Identify and correct printing problems
- Suggest improvements/enhancements to library’s computer and electronic device inventory
- Interface with external technicians as required to perform the above
- Train staff on software and hardware changes
- Work with department heads as necessary in the performance of these duties
- Provide information regarding the Information Technology Department to the Director as needed
- Perform other job-related duties as required

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
- High School diploma or equivalency
- Ability to understand and follow written and verbal instructions, policies, and procedures
- Ability to work patiently and amicably with staff and patrons of all ages
- Ability to read print
- Ability to place items in alphabetical and numerical order using the Dewey Decimal System
- General familiarity with libraries
- Ability to maintain privacy of patron records and material selections
- Ability pass a background check successfully
- Ability to learn new and emerging technologies
- Ability to understand and utilize IT best practices
- Ability to troubleshoot Windows 11 workstations and a variety of printers
- Thorough understanding of PC hardware, components, and parts
- Excellent interpersonal communication and customer service skills
- Knowledge of workstation imaging software and security software
- Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing
- Attention to detail
- Ability to multitask
- Flexibility in scheduling

- Environment: Work is performed primarily in a standard office environment; incumbents may be required to work evenings and weekends.
- Physical: Primary functions require sufficient physical ability and mobility to work in an office setting, to stand or sit for prolonged periods of time; to often walk, stoop, bend, kneel, crouch to floor level, reach to a height of 66 inches, climb, and twist; to lift, carry, push, and/or pull light to moderate amounts of weight (up to 25 pounds) including library materials, carts and furniture; to operate office equipment requiring repetitive hand movement and fine coordination including use of a computer keyboard; and to communicate verbally and in writing.
PREFERRED KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS
Experience with Koha/Aspen, Patron Point, PrinterOn, computer imaging software, Deep Freeze by Faronics, Microsoft Office, college or technical training in computer science
Other preferred knowledge and skills: willingness to learn, critical thinking , self-motivation, troubleshooting acumen, and curiosity about IT systems and practices
SALARY RANGE AND HOURS
The position is full-time, at 35 hours per week, with some nights and weekends required. The salary range is $40,000-$52,900. Medical, dental, retirement, vacation, and sick time benefits are included.
