Hiring Salary: $53,206 - $66,507/year

Position Information

Create positive impact on the Northwest Aurora neighborhood at the Martin Luther King, Jr. Library, used by a diverse group of patrons who come from all over the world with diverse educational and socio-economic backgrounds including an active community of families, and newcomers.

The MLK Jr. Library is seeking a Makerspace Librarian/Specialist who passionately embraces technology, science, art, and diversity. This librarian can inspire imagination, draw out potential, and create a safe and inclusive gathering place for the community. This position requires adaptability, flexibility, collaboration, communication, and the ability to identify priorities and shift focus quickly. We are seeking a dynamic professional with a positive attitude, excellent interpersonal skills, and a sense of humor, while working in an environment rich with diversity and challenges. We are searching for a bold individual who enjoys people and serving their needs. 

This Michael Brendle designed library currently has a design plan to expand to a second floor. The successful candidate will be looking at how to provide makerspace services once the library doubles in size. This library has the potential to become the community hub of the original Aurora but has not yet realized its full programming and service potential. Be part of the team that helps drive such an important and lasting change in this historical and diverse neighborhood!

This is a full-time, permanent position responsible for developing and conducting library makerspace programs and training as directed.
 
This position functions as the on-site person in charge in the absence of the Supervisor, in addition to assisting with service desk operations as needed.  This position may be hired to work primarily at a specific facility with a primary focus but will substitute at other locations as needed and depending upon staffing needs, may be re-assigned to a different primary facility.


Locations: Will work primarily at assigned location, hours may change based on business need.  May be required to occasionally to substitute at another Aurora Library location based on staffing needs.

Martin Luther King Jr. Library (9898 E. Colfax Ave., Aurora, CO 80010)

Hours will include days, nights, and weekends.   

PRIMARY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Provides friendly, efficient, and professional service to customers in-person, by telephone and email.
  • Creates a welcoming and collaborative makerspace environment, assisting patrons in using equipment and software, explaining, and implementing makerspace policies, coordinating credentialing and access, answering inquiries about the space and equipment, giving tours of the space, developing positive relationships with makerspace users, opening and closing the space, maintaining a clean and organized space, and ensuring a high level of safety at all times.
  • Creates and coordinates a schedule of programs for the makerspace, including group classes, orientations, open lab time, and individual appointments.  Assists in creating makerspace policies, and planning, delivering, and evaluating maker programs and outreach opportunities for children, teens, and adults.
  • Coordinates and participates in the implementation and use of technologies that support learning in STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Mathematics).
  • Gauges level of service based on community interest and need and provides relevant and meaningful services and programs to the residents of Aurora.
  • Oversees programming conducted by Library Assistants.
  • Works with community partners to plan and develop outreach events that may include attending fairs/events and/or speaking to community groups or school children.
  • Stays on top of trends in community makerspaces as well as the interests of the local community to evaluate current technologies, programs, procedures, and recommend new ones.
  • Manages and maintains makerspace equipment, including troubleshooting and performing minor repairs and coordinating with vendors on larger repairs or replacements.
  • Develops and maintains makerspace budgets, reports, statistics, and supply inventory.
  • Functions as the on-site person in charge overseeing staffing and facility customer related functions in the absence of the Supervisor.
  • Performs basic readers advisory and reference searches using library resources, on-line databases, and other reputable sources.
  • Assists customers with accessing and using library resources (books, databases, computers, etc.) and computer questions related to Microsoft Office products, internet navigation, email services, third party web sites and other software applications on public computers.
  • Contributes to service desk library operations as assigned or required.
  • Attends and contributes to meetings, branch staff meetings and participates in system wide committees/meetings as needed.
  • Keeps abreast of current developments in the field through attendance at and participation in conferences and workshops and through programs of continuing education, professional reading, and participation in professional groups.
  • Coordinates volunteers including training, scheduling, and tracking time.
  • May work on joint regional library service committees and user groups representing the Aurora Public Library.
  • Performs additional duties as assigned.


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS & WORKING CONDITIONS

A combination of relevant education and experience may be substituted for the minimum education and experience requirements on a year for year basis

Education: 

  • Bachelor’s degree in science, education, instructional technology, educational technology, computer science, and/or a related degree.
  • Masters of Library Science Degree or current enrollee in Masters of Library Science from an ALA accredited program.  
  • A Master's Degree in another field with relevant library experience may be considered.
     

Experience

  • At least one year of makerspace or related experience

Preferred Experience

  • Public library experience preferred.
  • Fluency in Spanish preferred.
  • Lead experience a plus.

Knowledge

  • Knowledge of current trends in makerspaces, technology, library services, literature, and other materials for all ages.
  • Recreational and educational needs of all ages, community interests, trends, and resources.
  • Internet computerized systems and their applications to assigned functions.
  • Basic troubleshooting in computer operation.
  • Standard library procedures and policies, current information technology, Internet, and database search capabilities.
  • Knowledge of the principles, organization, and practices of library service.
  • Library classification system.
     

Skills:

  • Strong interpersonal skills, with demonstrated success in working with people from many ages, backgrounds, and perspectives.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills with strong emphasis on instruction and public interactions.
  • Skill at providing training and support for patrons and staff.
  • Demonstrated problemsolving skills.
  • Strong organizational skills.
  • Proficiency, and comfort in the use of windows-based programs, variety of hardware and software products. 
  • Social Services oriented and skilled at finding local community resources for diverse populations.

Abilities:   

  • Ability to deal with stressful situations with tact and diplomacy.
  • Communicate with diverse customers/staff of all ages in a professional, age and culturally, appropriate manner.
  • Communicate effectively in writing; use general office equipment, computers, calculators, and copy/fax machine.
  • Perform basic mathematical calculations.
  • Follow oral and written instructions.
  • Work shifts, including some nights, and weekends. 
  • Ability to speak a second language a plus.


WORKING CONDITIONS

Essential Personnel:

  • When a local announcement of emergency or disaster is declared by the City, all City of Aurora employees may be required to work as essential personnel

Physical Demands:

  • Medium physical work requiring the ability to lift 50 pounds with or without assistance.
  • Frequent lifting, carrying, walking, and standing.
  • Hand/eye coordination to operate office equipment, carts, and moveable shelving.
  • Vision to read and interpret reports, documents, and other written information.
  • Frequent speech communication and hearing to maintain communication with employees and patrons.


Work Environment:

  • Works primarily in clean, comfortable environment with shared workstations and equipment
  • Shift work to include days, nights, working weekends and occasional holidays. Must be willing to work at least one closing shift.


Equipment Used: 

  • Uses standard office equipment including personal computer and common office software such as email, internet, Word, Excel and menu driven databases as a part of the Library automated systems.
  • This position may require the incumbent to use personal equipment (e.g. vehicle, cell phone, tools, etc.) in the course of their employment.
  • Uses makerspace machinery, software and hardware including but not limited to 3D printers, laser cutters, vinyl printer/cutter, Cricut, sewing machines, heat transfer machines, and other STEAM related machinery.
